Now appearing online from the NYT magazine, the tragic story of our dithering and inaction:

This narrative by Nathaniel Rich is a work of history, addressing the 10-year period from 1979 to 1989: the decisive decade when humankind first came to a broad understanding of the causes and dangers of climate change. Complementing the text is a series of aerial photographs and videos, all shot over the past year by George Steinmetz. With support from the Pulitzer Center, this two-part article is based on 18 months of reporting and well over a hundred interviews. It tracks the efforts of a small group of American scientists, activists and politicians to raise the alarm and stave off catastrophe. It will come as a revelation to many readers — an agonizing revelation — to understand how thoroughly they grasped the problem and how close they came to solving it. Jake Silverstein

What is there to say? I weep for Mother Gaia. :( :( :(

Thank you for helping create the political fiasco, sheeple. Don't join cults...ever. This whole thing has always been, and will always be, leftist fear mongering, while trying to extract money and raise taxes. Here is a clue: No amount of money is going to change what mother nature wants to do. If you think I'm wrong, try bribing tornadoes. Fuckme running!
There is a Trump cult and there is a climate change cult. Both are misguided.
Again- Climate doesn't care about money and it's going to do what it's going to do,with, or without us. Don't make your sucker bets and stop listening to people who are paid to make you a believer. IOW..don't be an idiot.

Wow, I can't believe I was duped by all of those environmentalists' claims that bribing tornados would save the Earth! Thank you compuwiz1!

How much did those environmentalists convince you to pay? Oh, never mind, your government will charge you appropriately and you will suck it all up. Those who think the government is going to solve this are the biggest morons on earth. Man and money doesn't get to decide what the weather does, morons, despite what the scientists tell you. It's really easy to find scientists, who will report what needs to be reported in the scam to extract money from the masses.

I'm sure P.T. Barnum loves you most of all.

Yeah, what do the 97% of ACTUAL CLIMATE CHANGE SCIENTISTS know? This is exactly like . . . Trump? Jesus, your partisanship has made you credulous unto stupid, and entrenched your ignorance to a level that would make you blush, had you any shame or perspective. :(

TBH I don't think talking to him makes much difference. It seems to act like a button that just makes him regurgitate the chinese whisper of a talking point he once heard. Maybe it looks for a keyword in the response in an attempt to appear to be crafting a relevant counter-response?

Just stop! Trump has nothing to do with the way I have viewed this scam, from the first time I saw Gore and his medicine show. You bought it and I didn't, and I saw it for what it was. It was you, who has been duped, my friend. And my partisanship....really??? No. I have a brain, capable of independent thoughts.

I'm sorry, if you believe man, money and moar government, are going to change what mother nature does. You want to put money into something that makes an actually difference? Send your money to Uganda.

This is literally one of the most proudly and profoundly ignorant statements I’ve ever read on P&N.

Forget Gore for a second because he is your convenient whipping boy, any other conclusions a plurality of scientists have made?

Earth is billions of years old?
Smoking causes cancer
Gravity
Earth is round?

I guess in your mind it would benefit us to pump more CO2 into the atmosphere, stop recycling, end pollution standards, emission standards.

It was so much better in the past stepping outside and seeing this...

Al Gore is a fraud. Has been, and will always be. He's a shit salesman, who had a convincing mouthful of samples, enough to get some wealthy people onboard, to help spread the scam. I don't buy narratives, spread by politicians, for financial gains, which is exactly what that scam was designed to do. It's worked marvelously well. Check your nose. It probably has one those rings in it.

Nothing wrong with what Gore is and what he was saying. You hate his climate message because you hate his politics. The two are not the same despite what Rush tells you.

And there have many times in the past where we have gathered as a nation to fight serious climate and other threats to our planet.

Lead - Took 20 some years but we did it as a nation. Along with the world.
Ozone hole - Chlorofluorocarbon ban again as a nation with the world.
DDT - Almost wiped out our national symbol.

And there are many more like air quality, river quality hell I remember when the Potomac, our nation's river, was a sewer and you couldn't swim in it. But people worked hard passed laws and cleaned up the river where people can now fish swim and kayak safely.

This is what humankind does they fix shit they break they dont wine on about al Gore or someone. So what have you done to help out with the world to make it a better place?

You might as well ignore your mechanic when he tells you your petrol engine needs oil.
Fuck the experts, cause, what the hell do they know? They are all in on the conspiracy to raise taxes anyway. Also, chemtrails!

When we were kids, we had an extremely retarded dog, named BoBo. If we didn't take him outside every couple hours, he'd either piss, or shit the bed. We loved him anyway. I'm sure somebody loves you. :p

You realize that's just a random smog pic from the 70s before we got our clean air regs together.

Again, any other scientific conclusions you want to dispute? Your bitch seems to be with science.

Think the earth is <10K years old??

That's the whole argument here. It is obvious to MOST people that HUMANS are causing changes (in addition to background changes that have been occurring). That tornado you mentioned could very well have been caused by a hotter earth (caused by humans), as weather events become more extreme with a warming earth. You've got a LOT of reading to do to fully understand what's happening (and I don't mean conspiracy theory sites/books/articles) if you think everything happening now is because of a status quo mother nature.

Here is my problem with some of you "supposed" bleeding heart liberals, including some of my own family: You will go on and on about climate change, global warming, etc. BUT, you have no interest in cleaning up the problems in your own back yards, or fronts. You will drive right past 20 homeless people, and you won't roll down your window, throw 'em a shirt, tooth brush, or a sandwich, but you're oh, so concerned about the planet. F@ck you guys. Your arguments are not valid! What you are, is a bunch of political tools, pretending to care.

We got past 1918 and it wasn't the end of the world.

So the physics of heat and mass transfer that works to keep your computer cool and our engineers use to do thermal analysis doesn’t work on the Earth because Al Gore.

Is he a.... wizard? compuwiz?

I’m trying to imagine telling my Heat and Mass Transfer professor that sure the blackbody radiation calculations he assigned shows the Earth should be about -18C without greenhouse gases but that can’t be right because Al Gore did a PowerPoint presentation. Guess what grade I would have got. :D

Unlike you, I took the time to investigate the work climate scientist have done myself. They’ve done everything they should have and it’s happening and it’s caused by us. It will be expensive to mitigate.

Nah, all you did is look for propaganda to support your misguided beliefs. Everyone needs to find something to back them up. Everything needs people behind it to legitimize it. The left is trying to normalize pedophiles....I'm sure you'll be onboard.

Heat doesn’t care about your money. You can install all the heat sinks you want on your CPU/GPU and it won’t change their temperature one iota. Ever tried bribing a CPU?

Just like with computing parts there is no action we can take that will alter the temperature of the earth.

Have you considered that you might be looking for propaganda to support your misguided beliefs? Even once? Science doesn’t care what you believe, it’s just science. You’re so wrapped up in a tribal mentality that you’re now trying to deny it.

Try stepping back for a minute and look at the evidence as if conservative elites and media weren’t trying to convince you to ignore it. The evidence isn’t just overwhelming, it’s mostly common sense. Don’t let conservatives play you for a fool.
