My mom just called me to tell me that she is going to have to put her 13 year old cat down today :(

He has had diabetes for the past 7 years and yesterday his blood sugar level was down to 17. He has been losing weight and his stomach is really hard now like there is a ball in there. The vet told her there is some blockage around the pancrease, and chances are its a tumor. The only other thing it can be is pancreatitis, but they are pretty sure it is a tumor that is just huge. He has been very lethargic the past few weeks as well my mom said. But in all honesty, the doctor said a cat with diabetes living to be 13 years old is very uncommon.

So she's going to put him down today :(

His name is Oreo. We named him that because he is a black cat w/this white stripe right up his belly from his tail to his nose, and he has white on his paws. He was a stray cat who roamed our neighborhood like 12 years ago then we just took him in. He was the coolest cat i've ever seen and let you do anything to him (such as just drape him over your shoulder, hold him in your lap with his belly up, he loved to "knit" on you with his paws).

I moved outof my moms like 3 years ago so I grew up with him, and when my mom would go on vacation I would stop by the house to give him insulin before and after work.

Oreo, I'm going to miss you buddy.

This year has blown for me ... dad died, 2 cats died, and my grandma is pretty much out the door.

I'll post pics of him later when I get home from work as I don't have any here.

EDIT:

So I called my mom after work yesterday to ask her how it went. Well she went back to the vet (where the cat was still remaining) to tell them to put the cat down, but when she went in, she said that Oreo was really energetic and happy and did like a full 180 turn from how he was 24 hours prior. The vet said that he seemed to be doing a lot better and some of the antibiotics they gave him may have been helping. He seemed ok so my mom took him home and they were going to bring him back in the morning to the vets to have him checked out again.

So last night I went to see him in case something did happen quickly so I could at least spend some time with him. He definitely seems to have lost a lot some weight and he was pretty lazy still but his tail was waggin and everything. he jumped up onto a bed that was like 3 feet high so he can still do that. he also had the IV still in his arm with a bunch of medical gauge around it, it was kind of funny to see him walk with that sometimes.

it does seem like too that his stomach was a lot less bloated so i don't know if some of the swelling went down. the doctor also thinks he can live at least 2 or 3 more months but it realy seemed like the vet didn't know too much.

well thanks for the post and hopefully he can be with us a little longer as long as he is not suffering :)

I'm so sorry, that's a rough year.

Our pets can often be a frame of reference on the passage of time, and 13 is a long time for a pet, you and that cat have probably both changed a lot in that time. Sounds like you have some great memories of the kitty. Carry them with you.

Sorry to hear this. :( One day we'll be reunited with all our loved ones.

*rose for teh kitteh*

Call it superstition is you must, I won't argue, but for whatever reason, my heart tells me this is so.

I, too, have had the distinct privilege to have know animals superior in most every way to many, many humans.

Here's to you, Oreo!

You're doing the right thing as hard as it is. My sympathies to you and your family. I know how hard it is to do that.

And for some reason known only to knuckle draggers like yourself the only appropriate place you could find to express your dislike of cats was in a sympathy thread? Ass.
