Lose the old computer, focus on building a new one?

I was turning my old P3 1GHz computer into a file server, so I bought a bunch of 200GB ATA hard drives and I was going to get a RAID card. I would also have to buy a new PSU because the old one is in an Antec SX1030 case and it's only 300 watts.

I'm also building a new computer for games so what I'm curious about is if I should forget about the old computer entirely?

The new motherboards have RAID on them so it would be ultra easy to do RAID 1 with SATA drives.

Am I wasting my time and money with the old computer?

It is your opinion if you are wasting money or not. If you need a file server, then use it. If not then don't do it. Either way. The computer can still be used as a spare or more

its always nice, i mean, REALLY nice to have an extra comp. but as bucks said, do you need a file server? do you have the money? its your decision.

An old capable PC(1ghz) is great for mp3 jukebox and movie playback onto tv. Also works good as a dedicated web surfer on a LAN so you don't bloat your gaming rig.

If you actually want/need a file server a second box is very convenient.Much cleaner to have a stable, dedicated fileserver than to shove a bunch of drives into your new games box. If the old box is starting to act up, then, by all means, scrap it and save yourself the world of pain that is flakey old gear. If all it needs is an SATA card, it should be fine. PIII 1GHz is a more than adequate secondary CPU.

I have an old Athlon 1600+ machine that I have used for over a year. I just threw that sucker in my basement, loaded win2k on it, and now holds all kinds of stuff. If I need to make a Norton Image Backup it gets put on there, or I need to transfer or store files, it just gets thrown on there. I think I am up to 800Gig's in HDD space 😱, and I don't think it has been turned off for over a year. Hey it runs fine, and I don't know what I would do without it. I would set up a Fileserver 😛
