Lord of the Rings Trial...

I downloaded the client last night. I am thinking of starting a Champion as I will probably spend most of the trial solo playing as I explore andd decide if I want to purchase the game. I also thought about Hunter as that class seems to be more the "mage" class. I am tired of WoW as many of us are and I have played both a Warrior and Mage in WoW. I like both types of playstyles. Looked at Guardian as well but that seems to be similar to a Prot War or Pally in WoW and I do not like either of those classes.

Any recommendations?

Hunters, Guardians, and Champions seem to be the number one solo classes. Funnily enough I have never really played any of those classes and I solo quite a bit.

However, if you can stick with a Lore-master through the early levels, they are very powerful later on.

The most fun class for me has been the Burglar, which gives you stealth and the ability to initiate group maneuvers, as well as many other things.

Sorry I can't comment with respect to WoW as I have never really played it.

If you have any other specific questions, let me know, and I will do my best to help out.

Thanks... I think initially I want to go with a strong Solo Class as I only have a week to check out the game. I want to be able to explore as much as I can with a character that excels at solo play. If I decide to stick with the game, I might switch to a class that gets stronger later on.

Thanks

I'm a 25 - Guardian now. I'm still on the fence about if i like it or not. I can sure take a lot of punishment, but the downside is that my dps kinda sucks. I sometimes switch over to a good two-handed weapon when I solo or when I'm in a group with another higher-level guardian.

I have a friend who is a 20 - Loremaster and is starting to like it. Like someone said earlier, he's getting increasingly more powerful as he gains more levels. I have another friend who's a 33 - champion, and she's loving it. Their armor seems samurai themed and her being japanese is really a turn-on for her. hehehe.

So far, I've been playing a little over 3 weeks, and I'm enjoying the game so far. Lots of quests to keep you busy and the experience gains through questing makes it the fastest option to level. It's funny groups are called fellowships and guilds are called kinships, so some of the terminology throws me off since I'm so used to EQ and WoW.

I also enjoy the LOTR mythology and books, so it's interesting to follow the quest lines that deal with Frodo's journey. It's also fun to explore how they implemented the geography of Middle Earth. I can't wait to finally make my way over to Rivendell, Gondor, Mt Doom, etc.

So...it's a good change from playing WoW and EQ2 which i canceled several months ago. I'll definitely stick with this until I get bored or until the next MORPG comes around.

Well I play on Gladden, but I think Brandywine and Silverlode are the most poulated servers.

If you end up on Gladden, feel free to look me up if you need a hand with anything.

Cheers,

Guardians = Tank

Loremaster = Mage/Mezzer - Crowd control/healing/pets

Champions = DPS and they do have a pet of a sort...hehehe he or she is always running around carrying a flag.

Minstrels = bard/healer

Hunters = ranger/dps

Burglers = rogue/dps haven't grouped with them much so I'm only assuming.

That's what i gathered so far from the different classes I've grouped with when I try to compare it to WoW or EQ.

You are actually describing Captains here somewhat. Captains are secondary healers and buffs, but not awesome DPS (though I do ok with my level 45) and the do get a pet (called a herald) that gives buffs.

Champions are a separate class and are pure DPS and AoE.

Loremaster's still uneffective against Undead? I hated running The Barrow-downs...

Coming from WoW as an end game priest healer, I found Minstrel a pain in the ass to play - wasn't nearly as effective as a healer should be.

To the OP - I played LOTRO for about 3 months and found it a fun MMO to play - there are/should be enough quests to keep you busy until you level cap and questing can be great if you find a good group. Unfortunately, LOTRO really didn't provide me with anything new that Blizzard isn't already doing better... :(

Got my Champion to level 6 already. I know that is not saying much if this game compares to WoW. The first 10 levels are pretty easy and then leveling seems to slow down after 25 or so. No matter. I enjoy the ride. The game is well designed but it is very similar to WoW. I am not sure if I will buy the full version but I am glad I have a few days left on the Trial. I went with Brandywine as the server. My Dwarf Champion's name is Tabrecious if any of you see me mulling around.

Thanks!
