Which do you prefer? I like the hobbit better, I watched the two films and when they ended I was thinking aww its over :( Whereas with the lotr movies I was pretty relieved when they finally ended, even though I liked them they dragged quite a bit in places.

I liked the first LOTR film and desolation of smaug. The others dragged too much for me

I liked the LOTR trilogy and by comparison found both Hobbit movies to be cheesy, labored and forgettable.

Based solely on the first Hobbit movie, I think the LOTR trilogy movies were better made films.
Haven't seen Smaug yet...but will once it hits the Redbox.

While I understand there's a fuck-ton of CGI in all of them...The Hobbit just seemed.......cartoonish in it's presentation.

OK, watched Desolation of Smaug last night. Not bad...but horribly slow in the telling of the story. (yeah, I know, Tolkein was also horribly slow in parts of all the books...but this seemed painfully slow in parts)
Overall, not a bad movie...again, some of the CGI seemed too cartoonish for my liking, but still not terrible.

The Hobbit films do not offer much excitement for me and the 1st installment didn't offer much to change that. Haven't seen Smaug. The LOTR, however, I consider to be one of greatest trilogy ever put on celluloid.

Holy Shit! There have been 2 hobbit films?

Man, I gotta figure out when the 3rd one comes out so I can rent them from red box.

I take it back, red box currently has the first. Guess I'll rent it soon.

I like LOTR better, but "Smaug" was pretty great - it has made me want to rewatch the 1st Hobbit movie again to see if in hindsight it isn't better.

While I haven't seen either of the Hobbit films yet, I felt like Jackson and the studios were just trying to milk the coffers of consumers.

The Hobbit Films are to LoTR what the "Prequels" were to the Original Star Wars Trilogy.

I only made it through about a half hour of the first Hobbit movie (my wife didn't even last that long). I'm a big time fan of the books, having read and re-read both the Hobbit and LoTR multiple times over the years. The Hobbit movie, while not horrible, didn't really impress me as anything special or really worth spending my time watching, unlike the LoTR movies which I greatly enjoyed-which is almost unheard of for a book you love.

OTOH I also didn't really care for the cartoon version of The Hobbit which came out in the seventies, so maybe I'm just a Philistine.

The hobbit was a children's bedtime story. The films have stretched a single, simplistic story across 9+ hours of celluloid. Worse, the story is pure adventure, minus the major story arc's dramatic tension in LotR. There's not nearly as much at stake. Even though the Smaug movie is an improvement, it achieves that by trying to cram lots of cgi action sequences in as filler. It feels like a cartoon or video game - much like the SW prequels (the dialogue is almost as bad in places as well). It's the source material - it just isnt as good.

The 1st hobbit had them walking for almost the entirety of the whole film. Then at the end they hop on huge eagles to escape the orcs. Why the fuck didn't they summon eagles from teh start?

The hobbit is a snore fest. Just imagine if they tried to make a trilogy out of just Fellowship.

Definitely Lord of the Rings.

The Hobbit movies were decent, but nothing compared to the LOTR trilogy. I agree with everyone else here - they seemed too childish in comparison. LOTR jokes were actually funny, while The Hobbit jokes made me roll my eyes. A perfect example is when
the party is fighting their way out from the goblins, and is confronted by the Great Goblin. He said something to the fact of "how do you think you're going to get past me?" Gandalf slashes his stomach open, and he says "Well, that will do it!" before dying / falling off the bridge.
The last quote really made me roll my eyes.

The Hobbit is a children's book. You guys would really be trashing the Hobbit movies if they had made the elves of Rivendell accurate to the book, dancing around and merrily singing all the time. Alas, they went with the stoic and serious elves that they had already established in the LOTR films...

I think FOTR is the best of the 5 movies released so far. Frankly the Hobbit has changed the main storyline so much that I don't think you can even compare it to the book directly.

This is a debate along the lines of Coke v Pepsi... doesn't take a lot of brainpower to predict how the poll is going to go.

LOTR movies had you gripping your seat. Hobbit movies have you desperately trying to escape your seat.

Neither, Game of Thrones by a mile. But if I am to pick between those 2 then the Lord of the Rings

The first hobbit was meh. The second one REALLY took some liberties with the story. But it held my attention for Evangeline Lilly.

Did anyone else think Legolas looked old in this movie?

But nowhere near as good as LotR movies.
