Ultima collection now on iPad!

I'm not entirely sure that he has the ability/rights to do that at this point.

On the other hand, he had talked about coming up with a new IP after "coming back down to earth" not terribly long ago. Thing is, I don't think Garriott has much left in the tank after what happened with NCSoft and Tabula Rasa. Not that TR wasn't a good game, but the events that unfolded during its development along with what happened between him and NCSoft kind of showed off what Garriott really cared about (Money, control).

If you check his page he working on a new game. My guess is that he founded a new company and has gotten back to making games and that it won't have anything to do with Ultima unless he somehow scored the rights back from EA. If he did then it's likely to be Ultima Online 2 since he's pretty much said as much in earlier interviews.

Just read wikipedia on tabula rasa, and they got rid of Garriot by when he went on a space flight, they sent out a letter saying it was him resigning, and it caused him a problem with stock options and he sued and won a verdict for $28 million. Didn't know about that.

Okay... I'm no longer a crowdfunding virgin. :(

(I now feel dirty for not having funded my other childhood sweetheart - which would be the Chris Roberts game)

I've an interest. But it'll be more of the 40-60 dollar variety, not the 250+ I kicked in for Eternity and T:TON.

Yep, popped my kickstarter cherry today, too. Regardless of how this does or does not turn out, I've spent $25 on worse things.

I doubt I'll pledge anything but it is good to see Garriott back in the game, and it looks like he'll reach his 1 mil goal with ease.

Once players are introduced to the game, they will discover their own story woven into the immersive world and lore surrounding them. Players may choose to follow the life of the adventurer or, if they prefer, focus on exploration and discovery. Players may even choose the life of a homesteader; either nestled within the safety of the settled lands, or on the dangerous but potentially lucrative frontier. The world is full of opportunities and challenges!

I've seen 100 games try that and none of them have ever been worth jack shit. It's a freaking dead end. Instead of wasting time and resources developing a system to allow some idiot to spend 100 hours a week manning the counter at a virtual candle shop do a better job of building the paths that people will buy the game for.

Sep UO actually did that....it made things viable - wanted to be just crafter? You could in that game......there were no classes; nothing limited....*sep damn dial up ;)*

I think he can pull this off; as fantasy rpgs is his bread and butter..

I got pretty nostalgic for UO for a minute there; pledged at the $30 level. Then I read more stuff on the website, realized that this really doesn't strike me as an attempt to ambitiously build upon the awesomeness which was Ultima Online. Then thought back to how little I actually enjoyed my Tabula Rasa experience and decided that I'd really rather hold off on handing my money over until there's some actual proof that this warrants the purchase.

^^you may have talked me out of breaking my kickstarter cherry. Its not an mmo either it looks more like the Guild Wars 1 model, town/city hubs then instanced adventures. I doubt you'll be able to mess with other players much.

Well there are also hints of micro-transactions. Anyways its not the sort of game I want. If I wanted this sort game I rahter go with guild-wars 2. I much rather have a single player game with grand story.

I was thinking that effectively housing rent could essentially = micro transactions for in game currency, Lord British's realm could easily gave rent inflation. I also wonder if any of the in game early housing could actually sell for real money. Space is limited and seems like crafting & stores are encouraged.
If so it still may be a good thing. I hate how money is only tight when you first start then it effectively becomes irrelevant because nothing ever removes money from games

I'm pretty excited about Richard G getting back into development.

The sad part is that the proposal is so arbitrary and generic that he can pretty much go in any direction. I wish that developers who want to solicate funds via Kickstarter were required to provide a proof of concept. How about an alpha build that gives us some idea about how it will work? The art just has to be serviceable.

If they had a product and they needed financial support to take it the extra mile I'm very supportive, but it's starting to feel like Kickstarter is a welfare system for developers who are broke.

"I want to make a game, give me money."
"We are going to need more than that. What's the plot?"
"Hmm well the player goes on an adventure to stop a bad thing"
"That's it?"
"Here are some drawings my neighbor did for me. As you can see, the player is definitely on an adventure."
"That's not much to go on."
"Well, it's going to be single player and multiplayer so it will be new and innovative."
"In what way?"
"Well, we don't really know yet but trust us. I'm Lord British dammit why are you giving me crap over this."
"Well if it's multiplayer, who's going to pay for the servers. Simcity has really made people weary of the whole "single player like multiplayer" model. How about a solid single player game with a good old fashioned expansion or two? Without all the online stuff, you would have a crap ton more money available for making the game better.
"We'll get it right I swear as long as my name is Richard G!"
"It's funny because Peter M said the exact same thing like 5 times, but then again somehow he makes money in the end. Oh well, go ahead but if you're game is another generic RPG with a DLC/DRM delivery mechanism camoflaged to look like multiplayer, your name won't save you."
"It's ok because I have two names. Lord British FTW!"

Did you watch the video? He also did a Rooster Teeth pod cast and explained a lot. While, I agree Richard Garriot is almost as ambitious as Peter M, he has delivered far of a lot more in department. What he did with the Ultima series and the revolution that was Ultima Online changed how RPGs were made. And he went into space. That has got to account for something.

I am just having difficulty funding a Kickstarter for someone who blew 25-million to go into space. Exactly what does he need my forwarded cash for? Kickstarter was supposed to be used for cash strapped developers (in my mind) or those that didn't have the up front funding to get this up and running. He doesn't have this problem at all, yet needs my kernel cash to do anything?

He stated the reason he is using Kickstarter is so his company isn't a tied to a publisher and their demands. He would rather let the community of people willing to "invest" be the people he has to answer to. He also stated he has invested quite a bit of money into this project.

You're also "pre-buying" the game. So if it's a title you're planning on getting anyway, you're essentially losing nothing in the long run.
