Actually, you can get a Lite-On 48x/24x/48x via the following method (which I proved to work successfully myself earlier today):
Staples has the Memorex 48x/24x/48x drive on sale for $69.99. Head to Huge Wallet and look for a $10 off Staples coupon that you can use in the store (or, look for an on-line coupon if you're going to place your order on-line.) So, now you're down to $59.99 for the drive. Staples then has a $20 rebate on this drive. Finally, you're down to $39.99 + tax for this drive and you don't have to wait on your shipment from Dell.
This drive is definately a Lite-On drive. A few of the CDR/W sites have indicated that *all* of the Memorex drives are manufactured by Lite-On.
Now, to heat the deal up a little, the drive has the newest chipset - the "6" chipset in it. You'll have access to full CAV writing with this drive - not just a variation, plus the drive is fully compliant with Mt. Ranier packet writing software. Finally, there is firmware available so you can update the drive so it'll burn at 52x. This drive also comes with the retail version of Nero. My drive was manufactured during August of 2002.
So, tell me - why would anyone buy the 52x drive from CompUSA for $69.## after a rebate when such a hot deal exists at Staples with the Memorex drive?
Personally, I don't care about going to a 52x burn -- quite yet. Actually, 48x is pretty darn fast. As a quick test, I made a CloneCD backup of Mac OS 10.2. I put in a generic CDR of which I didn't even know the speed that it was rated for. I then proceeded to dump the backup to this blank CD. What was the total time to cook the disk you ask? Just a couple of seconds under 3 minutes. Now, is that hot or what??
For any of you peeps in Northern Virginia-land, the Chantilly Staples still has one of these drives left. However, I suspect a lot of Staples stores have these drives in stock because a lot of people have been buying the Cendyne 40x/12x/40x drive for $29 (after rebates.) But, I encourage you to look right past the Cendyne, spend $10 more and get yourself a *real* CD burner. After all,
if you can't run with the big dogs, then why not just stay on the porch?
Enjoy! And, happy purchasing!!
