Looks like Win 7 beta will be out at CES

Actually, this has been known for at least a few days now. Mary Jo Foley at ZDNet has blogged on this as has Paul Thurrott and others.

if by a few days you mean 1 day then your correct. Anything before that was speculation.

Paul did a review on it today. http://www.winsupersite.com/win7/win7_beta.asp

"The Windows 7 Beta is recommended, but only for technical users.

Well, I would say very well informed speculation. Microsoft has not exactly done a very good job of keeping the lid on this one. (Which I think was on purpose to help fuel anticipation for the release of this beta.)

What do you guys think?

For a more "advanced" or technical user, it'd be fine. Windows 7 is surprisingly solid for a beta (I've heard many say they would be content using it as their primary OS, full time).

Windows 7 is pretty solid. I've been beta testing for Autodesk for a bit now. It runs all their apps well. I prefer it over Vista by quite a bit, lots of the annoyances are gone. On vista some of the applications like Maya experience odd pauses where it isn't the hard disk being accessed or a lack of memory but the application is just unresponsive for a few seconds. That is gone with windows 7.

That said it should not be used as a primary OS. It still has areas that are not finished and I tried installing applications written for vista like anti virus and those either refused to install or made the OS unstable. So for now its coming along nicely, but not ready for primetime.

Will they release windows 7 64bit the same day they release the 32 bit version?

hopefully, i may try the upgrade instead of full install, when the 64 bit comes out.

I tried vista beta and it was pretty bad... actually i ran 95a, 98 1st ed, xp sp 0 and all seemed pretty bad...

maybe i just talked myself out of beta.

Any idea if vista beta keys will work on win 7 beta?

There is a 64 bit version in testing, the one I am using is Build 7025 and is 64 bit.
I really wish they would stop with all this 64 bit/ 32 bit and all the ultimate, business, home, stuff and just release one version. I hate explaining what all the differences are to people. It only serves to confuse the public.

You will need a new key for Windows 7 beta.

I really cannot see Vista staying around when 7 is released. There is just no reason to keep using vista other than upgrade cost. 7 is everything vista should have been.

Anything fixed in your 64bit? The only problem I had was my VPN software did not work in vista 64. But I know there have been some other minor issues.

Also how is the cold boot ram usage? Just curios how a 1GB machine will fair, because from what i have seen running 7 with FF and explorer open hits about 1GB usage.

Also did you mean build 7005? Because I dont think build 7025 has been made yet?

Mainly it is just overall faster. It isn't really any big changes but lots of little things.
I don't use VPN software so I can't say in that area. But I have had a few instances where it says that my network connection is not working when its working fine. That involves going into the network settings and disabling and enabling the connection. Something neither vista nor xp have a problem with on this pc.

I don't have any pc with 1GB ram and this one is set so that I can't change the hardware config on it. Its a 16GB pc but for what its worth this is the mem usage:

Right now with nothing running but KMplayer - used for watching tv on the pc, + IE, no other programs running in background , the memory looks like this:

In use 745MB
Modified 59MB
Standby 1589MB
Free 13991MB

The build is 7025 sub 4, its what was given to me by Autodesk. I have no idea what the sub 4 part means.

I can't do much testing on it except for the Autodesk stuff as I'm not allowed to install things like games on the pc, they want to keep potential problems easy to find so I have a small list of what I can and can't install.

WOW! Do you know how much of an improvement that ram usage is? Only 754 MB used with IE and KMplayer opened in 64bit! That is very good.

Could you post the In use after a reboot?
