Noticed that my HL2 download is back at 75% and Steam is downloading more stuff.
I hope this means HL2 is close to being released.

It's funny - I have downloaded every byte of the preloaded material, but I'm still not sure why I bother. As far as I know there's no benefit to preloading if you intend to buy the game on CD/DVD, and unless it's cheaper to buy it by Steam (which I doubt VU would have allowed), I almost certainly will buy the CD/DVD version. Ah well . . .

Why buy the CD?
I can't imagine that they will release it at BM before Steam, thereforethe second it is released, we can type in a CC number and start the install.

Cause they can not release the game before VU releases (its in the contract, or so i've read)... and since VU will be selling B&M, they will be available at the same time.

If you're just interested in Half-Life 2 and not the other "commercial" mods (such as CS:Source or DoD:Source), then there really isn't any incentive to buy through Steam (well aside from not having to go to the store, install it, etc).

However, it seems that Valve is going to let folks who purchase HL:2 through Steam get CS:Source immediately. Yes, you won't be able to play HL2 until it hits the stores in November(?), but you can be fragging-it-up in Counter Strike:Source while you wait. I'm not sure when Valve will open up sales for HL2 via steam, but I imagine it will be sooner than later.
