Financiapocalypse has claimed yet another victim. This time it is Office Depot?and they are planning to close 112 stores, or 9% of their North American locations over the next three months.

A list of the store closings has not been made available, but the breakdown will look like this: "45 stores in the Central U.S., 40 in the Northeast and Canada, 19 in the West and eight in the South." They are also shuttering six of their 33 distribution facilities and scaling back openings to 20 in 2009.

To be honest, i'm kinda surprised they have stayed around this long. I imagine the office supplies are the only thing keeping them going, but with stiff competition from Staples and Office Max, I wonder who is doing the best.

I stopped shopping at OD years ago when they started to exclude Technology items from all their coupons.

office depot isn't going out of business. it is closing stores that underperform its cost of capital. its something that should happen even during good times, but for psychological reasons people tend not to do it during good times.

I know they are not going out of business....but how is radioshack still in business? I never see anyone in that store. How do they afford the mall rent? Do they really sell that many fuses and relays?

I won't be surprised if the OD near me closes. I've been there numerous times and most times there might be 1 or 2 customers there. There's an Office Max about a mile away anyway.

It'll suck if they close the one here. The nearest Staples is about 10 miles away and Office Max is ghetto as hell...they built a brand new store about 5 years ago...and it was ghetto the minute it opened...

Maybe staples to close your ass shut when Atlanta football players are done with you...

Damn, that was a wee bit harsh....

I hope it does not happen near me. If it does, all we will have is Staples and an Office max that is 30 miles away. If it does happen though...it's time to buy a new printer...provided they do not mark it up....

Yeah, the OfficeMax in Dorchester, MA is horrible. The doors no longer open electronically...in the summer, they have flies in the store, the sales floor has a 2:1 ratio of empty space to used space.

OD overbuilt so this is a needed adjustment. Opening more and more stores doesn't necessarily net more sales. OD stores were opened in places thaey had no natural market, strip malls at the edge of development in towns that already had ODs closer to businesses. OfficeMax does this as well, to a lesser extent.

Radio Shack survives because there are a bunch of things that RS carries that no one else does. Also, RS runs small convenient stores. You can be in and out of RS with what you went to buy in the time it takes to reach the proper section of a OD,Officemax, or Staples.

Yea, the only other place I can stop at besides radio shack is Frys for resisters, relays and other little gadgets. There are local stores but the only one I know of is 20 miles away from me compared to 3 for radioshack.

CC+OD merge to become one big failure?

Haha, the CC+OD near hear are adjacent to each other.

lol, same here in LA. It was originally Compusa and Office Depot side by side, but after Compusa rode the failboat, CC thought they could do better and moved in.

Awesome, not one closing in NY. Office Depot has decent sales once in a while.

EDIT: lol there are only 2 near me. I thought they had a stronger presense in NYC.

We could have a sticky thread with a title that could be changed to reflect the name of the business and number of stores. There's going to be a rash of these before it's all over.

Actually this totals 6, and you can add a 7th store--York, PA to the chopping block list
