Looks like New York is trying to ban Radar Detectors

Got an e-mail from Escort Radar this morning about it. I did a bit of searching on the the government sites and sure enough there are two bills out there in the Senate and Assembly
I won't even get into all the reasons for this. Connecticut's tried this and had to repeal it, now New York is being idiots too. :disgust:

Anything that cuts into the Road Tax revenue is bad and must be banned. Damn fools.....

I don't even understand how a laser detector would work properly to help you avoid tickets... Don't they just let you know when you've been tagged by a laser? If so, whats the point in spending the money?

I think it's kind of lame as well, but can you really get that mad at them for banning something that helps you break the law?

Even if it passes I'm sure it won't be very well enforced. Just put the unit in a place that isn't visible from outside the car and the only time you'd have to be worried about a citation for it is if you're already pulled over for something else and the cop happens to spot the radar.

Radars are for wimps.
Speed carefully like a man and take your lumps when you get 'em.

My radar detector has never been more useful than when I used to frequent the NY Thruway. Troopers eevveerrryywhere. My radar detector saved my ass many a time. So this is no surprise that NY wants to ban them, all that new ticket revenue

I have never understood radar detectors-- It is just a way to circumvent the law. Stupid that they are legal anywhere--- keep close to the speed limit :|

Banning radar detectors won't save lives. I don't think it will increase ticket revenues through increased speeding tickets either since cops still catch people speeding because not everyone has one. They will be able to start ticketing for having a radar detector though and that's where they will make more money. I myself don't have one, but have often thought about getting one. I find it's easier to just not exceed the speed limit by more than 5mph. I've gone through speed traps donig 5 over and the cops don't even bother chasing you down for it. They look for the big infractions like 10-20 over. Pretty sure it's because they have an easier time making those stick when it goes to court.

I guess that too many people are fighting their speeding tickets thanks to their new $600+ driver's responsibility surcharges, and now they need to add ANOTHER fine on top of that to increase their ticket revenue.

Yet another reason why the New York highway system sucks. Avoid it like the plague!

Oh well, don't let them see it even if they pull you over [for you speeding and not noticing the detector]. Stuff it somewhere. They can't search your car without permission.

Bah... there are a lots of ways for the cops to get past that rule. If they have even a hunch that you're hiding something, they'll search you.

On what grounds?

If they think that you're intoxicated or "acting suspicious", for example. If a cop really wanted to get you, I'm sure that he'll find a convenient excuse to search your car.

maybe the police should also follow the rules and stick to the speed limits on the highways when they are not responding to an emergency.

this "i'm above the law" bullshit mindset cops have annoys me

IDK where you live but out here in NY both the local cops and the State troopers dont drive all that fast on the highway they seem to drive 75-80 which is what 90% of the normal people drive

They've been banned in VA for years now. I think I've only gotten one speeding ticket in 12 years living out here.

Cops around here drive about 70 in the 55 and will most certainly pull you over for that.

I thought Radar Detectors were already illegal in New York though... guess I just heard wrong .

Somebody has to pay for the increase in gas when the police office leaves his motor running while inside a Dunkin Donut shop for hours. Might as well be speeders.

Usually when I run into cops on the road they are driving at exactly the speed limit, which is pretty annoying because it just creates a massive traffic jam of people who refuse to go by the cop. I usually just pass the cop going about 2mph faster than them.
