Looks like I've chipped the screen on my laptop.

Just great, I got a new laptop two months ago for me to take overseas. At somepoint while I was traveling in the past two weeks I noticed a spot on the middle of the screen. I just thought it was a piece of dirt or something. Now that I look at it today, I can't clean it off and using a piece of paper it looks like I actually have a noticeable chip in the screen. It's right in the middle of the screen and drives me crazy. Is there a way to fix it up? There are products that advertise that they fill in scratches in things like lenses and such but I'd be hesitant to use that on my laptop even if I knew that they worked.

don't mess with it, you'll just make it worse into a crack or something.
lcds are delicate.

Oh come on, I'd at least try some polishing / scratch filling compound.. it is good enough for your windshield, your eyeglasses, I think if you are careful in applying it it would be OK for your LCD screen also.. if not wipe it off.. You can try a little down in the corner where you will never have video anyway if you are worried or look for people who have succeeded with it.

I'm not shipping a 12 lbs laptop from Hong Kong to the US that is my personal and work computer for a repair that probably wouldn't be covered in a warranty.

Your windshield and glasses have a glossy finish.
If he is distracted by a small chip, he will be more distracted by a dime size smooth spot in the middle of his anti-glare screen.

windshield is glass and relatively thick..at least the part that isn't laminated plastic.
lcd tends to be several thin layers of plastic/filters with the top bit sometimes having anti glare finish. not much to polish, and pressure sensitive.
