A 25&#37; increase in per-sales tax revenue results in a 3% decrease in number of smokers? That sounds like a lot of new tax revenue to me. Not that it's necessarily a bad thing, but there it is.

Australia's government keeps amazing me with just how heavy-handed they are. Locking down objectionable game sales; talk of filtering the entire continent's internet; stripping cigarette companies of their brands (an incredibly valuable asset) and telling them to STFU and take it like a bitch; it just keeps coming...

It's expensive, it's extremely addictive, it smells terrible, the smell saturates your home and the smoke coats everything with tar, it causes multiple dangerous health problems.

Seriously, what's there not to love about this truly awesome stuff?

until there's actual scientific evidence that smoking is bad for you they should quit passing all these anti smoking laws and taxes
 
I'm tired of telling people that letting their governments do stuff like this is bad. I already quit smoking, so fuck it. I don't care anymore.

Do people actually think adding more to the price of something addictive is going to do anything to make people stop using it? Other than lining pockets of course.

It does reduce smoking rates. Combined with other measures, it has helped convince people to reduce their use or quit entirely.

Not to call you out but do you have any statistics to back that up? Every time they raise prices on cigarettes my smoking friends just complain that its too expensive but continue to keep on smoking anyway. I know people who leave the county that Chicago is in to buy cigarettes in another county here in Illinois for example.

I realize this isn't a perfect comparison but do you think people addicted to meth or crack would just stop using it if they raised the prices on it?
