Earlier this year (january) I had the HVAC draft inducer motor (Lennox Packaged Airhandling unit - 12GCS036X) was making a lot of noise when it started up. I called an HVAC guy, he wanted 800 to fix. Anyway the guy also said it was not needed to fix right away, so I said fine.
ATOT HVAC tech's diagnosed it right the first time. It made its sound during the summer months when the AC turned on, then around august it stopped making noise. I waited for the cooler weather to kick in and finally in November I was able to check the heater.
All was well, I was able to hear the draft inducer motor kick in, then the heater came on.. however it wasnt the loud draft inducer motor like in january, it was just a quiet whirring noise.. not the loud rattle.
Tonight I heard my first 'boom'. On this cycle of heat I heard the draft inducer motor kick in (whirring sound) then about 15 seconds in I hear 'boom' and then about 5-10 seconds later the blower kicks in. Its doing it once in a blue moon. Its not a regular thing.
How bad is it to run this thing tonight, or should I turn it off? The unit was installed in 2005 and last check it was still under warranty for some parts, wonder if the 'boom' is covered under warranty.
ATOT HVAC people and the tech both said that without the draft inducer motor working the heat wont turn on. Obviously that is working, the heat is on right now. I wonder the noise I heard earlier this year was a broken 'fan blade' or something not the motor.
