Looks like Hollywood is finally acknowleging that their slump is their failure to produce decent movies..

This article was a nice reassuring read for me because it finally seems like the idiot execs are starting to realize why they have problems at the box office.

Years ago, there typically would be about 4 movies that I would want to see at any given time in theatres. So, I would see on average four or five movies a month.

Now, there's usually ZERO movies that I want to see in theatres. So, I almost never see any movies. It dissappoints me because I enjoy going to a movie a hell of a lot more than renting a DVD..

At least they seem to have identified the problem, though. Crappy movies = crappy sales.

first of all most theatre screens look worse than sh!t, IMO. IMAX is better but hardly any movies are released on IMAX.
secondly, i dont want to spend at least $15 per person to go see a movie for 2 hours and buy some popcorn. for that much i could buy a dvd and watch it at home.

I stopped going to movies when this slump started. I would go to about 1 every 2 weeks. Now, it is down to about 1 every 2 months. Effe it.

we go for the dinner/movie experience, once every month or so. I stay home more than enough as it is. The movie doesn't have to be intellectual, factual, or even inspiring... as long as it's entertaining during the 2 hours.

i love going to the movies. i've probably seen close to 20 movies in the theatre this year, and plan on seeing more. I'm going to see one on Friday actually but not sure which movie, my GF just suggested we go see it. She loves movies just as much as me.

the movie theater experience is down the crappers. the crowds suck - you usually end up with a crying baby or rowdy idiots who cant keep their mouths shut. the refreshments are a rip off. the movies are just rehashed story lines that dont offer anything but huge explosions and great special effects.

They're trying to find any possible reason why they're not making as much money, including gas prices, and dvd sales... but what it really boils down to is just that most of today's movies suck. Make better movies that arn't the same crap, and more people will go see them!

the 'slump' is manufacturered. they only compare weekend sales, not weekday sales. when you added in weekday sales there was no slump, at least for the first 5 months of the year.

Even though they have started to admit what everyone knows (that the product has been lacking in quality and quantity) they still have to get their digs in at the exhibs.

The fact is that most of the studios got caught with their pants down bigtime this year with the exceptions of Fox (they better send a Thank You card to Lucas), Warner Brothers, and New Line. There most likely won't be any standout films until November.

about time they start to realize it.

there have been very few original movies lately. We have a bunch of re-makes which are worse then the original. though Batman was great. most movies just suck. no plot and all explosions. then you add in the cost of $8 a ticket. crappy theaters and 20 min worht of commercials (i don't mind the coming attractions) and it makes an atmosphere i don't want to go to.

when i can purchase a DVD for $15 and enjoy it at home. while it may not look or sound as good as a theater i find it way more enjoyable.

Did you read the article? That's exactly what some of them are realizing.

For the year BO has taken a 7% hit and attendance has fallen 9% so far (down for the 3rd straight year).

Now we are coming into September-October which is almost always a lackluster time for film. If November-December does not pay off as well as expected the industry will be in real trouble (even moreso for the still publicly held companies).

They need to realize that computer generated graphics is what is really hurting their business. Movies today are filled with tons of unrealistic stunts. It was cool the first few times but now it is simply boring and the more unrealistic the stunts and action the worse it gets. Before the wave of CGG hit the movies the film makers had to use creative means to make a film and stunts had to be doable and thus were much more BELIEVEABLE. I no longer watch action films of any kind because of the CGG, it has truly killed films in my opinion. It is way overused, even in films that are not even action based.

That is true... the latest Bond film was a shining example...
