Looks like Giambi and Yanks finally agreed on 7 years deal.

This is probably the most dumb ass move this organization has made 🙁 I'm gonna cry my eyes out when Giambi strikes out with 2 outs in the bottom of the 9th in game 7 of world series. Tino is the best.

As much as I'll miss his stellar hitting, I'm glad Oakland didn't spend half their payroll on one guy.

Yankee fans often say "we don't buy our team, we have homegrown talent". It is true the Yankees have a good farm system. But this is a clear case of deep pockets being an advantage. The Yankees are mentioned as being "interested" in almost every free agent... because they can afford any of them that they choose! Mussina last year, now Giambi. Most teams can only sign those types of players once every 5 years, if ever.

I don't disrespect the Yankees for doing this, because they are well within their rights under the no-salary-cap CBA of MLB. But even Yankees fans have to admit that the Boss just "bought" his team some wins this year.

I'm sorry to see him leave the A's and his brother. But, there's no way Oakland's going to pay that kind of money. I guess it'll free up some payroll for the A's though, which was the most profitable team in the AL this year.

I still can't get over the fact that the Yankees DIDN'T win the world series. I mean, it was about time. Finally.

i hear the yankees aint done yet. on sportscenter last night it looks like they're going to be going after Moises Alou too. There needs to be something done with the way baseball works... maybe a salary cap or something because teams are ending up with an abundance of talent while others don't have a chance in hell at signing big name free agents anymore.

ARGH!

now the bay area turns to barry watch.

if both of them go, baseball is gonna SUCK next season in the bay. freaking freaking freaking....

"now batting, cleanup, no.9, olmedo saenz"

*freesia kicks her tv*

This is horrible horrible news for the game of baseball.

Don't ever let any Yankee fan tell you it's homegrown talent. They have the money to sign players to the farm and develop them.

Giambi 18.5 mil
Jeter 20.0 mil
Mussina 17.0 mil
Williams 12.0 mil
Rivera 9.0 mil
Clemens 10.0 mil
76.5 mil ON 6 PLAYERS

This is absolutely ridiculous, and they're not done yet. The payroll will be over $115 million next year. And Bud Selig is going to get rid of the Twins. 🙁

I'm sorry Rod Carew.

Blues, your counting needs some help, you listed 6 players not 5. 3 out of those 6 players were drafted by the Yankees when they sucked and raised through the farm systems, which has nothing to do with their money. Yanks bought the rest of them. They make the most money of any team in sports, consequently they can spend the most. That's the way it works in any business. I didn't see anyone in the video card industry trying to create a sales cap or revenue sharing among companies to save 3dfx. Baseball has long since become a business.

Oopps..you're right Pariah. 6 players.

You're also absolutely right - the game is a business now. And the Yanks signing Giambi was the straw that broke the camel's back for me.

As for the draft...don't the players and the team have to come to an agreement? As in..here's a large sum of money for you to come to the Yankees - signing bonuses and all?

I don't blame Giambi for taking the money. Who wouldn't?

But, the system itself needs to be changed.

And what is Bud Selig doing?

Cutting out the Twins and the Expos. And maybe the Marlins.

Sir, you have to double check your info:

Giambi 18.5
Jeter 13
Williams 12
Mussina 10
Clemens 10
Rivera 9

Argo, even using your numbers, that total of $72.5 million is higher than the ENTIRE 2001 payrolls of all but 10 other teams, just for 6 players.

Yeah, but as you can see LA and Boston aren't that much further. How come nobody ever complains about them?

You're right Argo, no one complains about LA and Boston.

Frankly because neither team has won the Series or the Pennant in a long time. No Boston jokes, please.

But, here's the thing. If either team bought/signed a free agent: Manny Ramirez and Kevin Brown, and then went on to win the Series or the Pennant, everyone would be saying 'they bought the Series!'.

That's what's happening with the Yankees right now.

And it's mostly truth with a little jealousy.

I, for one would like to see a salary cap so the small market teams can compete.

I do not blame NY Fans or George. Baseball is a business. If you have the money, spend it. The fans pay to watch the games, buy the merchandise, etc., so why shouldn't they deserve to have their money contribute to player's salaries?

<sigh>

He's younger and an overall better player, so they want him instead of Tino. But...TINO RULES! :Q

He kicked the booty last year and he came through in the clutch.

<sigh>

I love the Yankees and I think Giambi will be great...BUT TINO! :Q

Just another highlight of exactly what is wrong is baseball. There NEEDS to be a salary cap no question. The A's, a small market team, just cannot compete on an equal playing field with a team like the Yankees who recieve over $100 million a year from cable TV rights alone. THey can afford to go after anyone they want and not worry, its disgusting. If there isnt a salary cap imposed soon Im going to stop watching.

So is he for sure going or what?

What the hell are the A's going to do with out him? Sure it will relieve some payroll but they are a small-market team in the first place....

The A's were doing so well the past two years too....I can see this as the turning point in their franchise. They will be back to being another Kansas City Royals, or worse, Montreal Expos.

I have liked this team ever since I was 5 years old (I am 20 now).....but now none of my teams have potential, except maybe the Broncos (NFL) but they are too beat up this year, I have no idea what will happen to them next year.

After the Bulls (NBA) turned to complete ass I started having to root for other teams, I don't want this to happen for baseball too. 🙁

<< I'm sorry Rod Carew. >>

What does he have to do with it? Did His Brewers struck out more than any other team in history last season... so they fired the pitching coach. Go figure. 😱

It's not about the Boss buying a better team... it's about New York buying a better team. The Yankees made a profit last year. That means the people of New York went to games, paid for hot dogs, bought hats, jackets, etc.

Let me reiterate: in a league that lost 232 MILLION dollars last season, the Yankees made a profit of $40 mil.
IMO, New Yorkers deserve all the talent they're willing to pay for. Until the fans in other cities are willing to pay out the big $$, they should prepare to lose their best players to free agency.

The NBA has a salary cap that the MLB owners would kill for, yet the NBA is no more exciting than baseball. The Bulls killed everyone, now the Lakers are killing everyone. Sort of like the Yankees are now killing everyone.

They still have one of the best pitching staffs in baseball (bullpen needs a little help) and some good young players like Dye, Chavez, Tejada, and Long. They have some money now to go after some of the other free agents. And of course they have a fantastic farm system that will hopefully keep turning out good players.

I think the A's can contend again in '02, but it will be tougher for them.

I'm sorry, $18.5 per is way too much to pay for a one dimensional(hitting) player. A first baseman, at that! They're a dime a dozen.
If Giambi could field his position, or move to the outfield, he'd be a great asset, but for $18.5 mill, a team could get three 25 homer guys easily and have an entire outfield to boot.
I REALLY respect the A's not signing him just because he was kind of loved around Oakland. I'm guessing J.P. Ricciardi made that decision right before he left Oakland for Toronto, which makes me very happy he came up here. He's gonna be so good for Toronto! 🙂

Yep.. the point is that baseball is supposed to be a sport or game, not a business competition. You don't win by driving the other guy out of business, you win on the field. So unlike in the business world, I think it makes a lot of sense to put a salary cap on. At the least it would slow down the ridiculous salary growth -- but because of that exact fact it aint gonna happen.

According to NY Newsday, the A's were NOT profitable this year. In fact that didn't break even, but were close. (No link, since it's the actual paper I read this in) Granted, one would think logically, making it so far in the playoffs with such a low payroll they'd be in the black. However, according to this article, only 5 teams made a profit this year. Supposedly they are the Yankees, Mariners, and perhaps the Twins, Brewers and Cubs.

Like some others said, I don't have issue with the Yanks signing players that want to play for them. The issue is the environment that makes it such that the 'Rich get richer."

What I found hilarious in the article was that Texas lost ~$25million this year. Hmmm... $25 million... Sounds similar to the amount ONE player on that team is making.
