looks like Blackbox development has resumed :D

X controls mice, not bb

also, try bbconf, it is a pretty nice gui configuration tool for bb.

edit: just noticed this in the "news" section there:

Summary:Blackbox lives!

Yes it is true, blackbox has a new person behind it. My name is Sean 'Shaleh' Perry and you may remember from such movies as "Debian developers, your friends and saviours" or "Fixed in the next release". Along with the bbkeys hackers vanRijn and xOr there is nothing but good in the future.

<< X controls mice, not bb >>

Funny, I've always changed the mouse from right- to left-handed from within WM's.

I'm pretty sure that you can set your mouse to be left handed in XF86Config (or XF86Config-4)

X handles the protocols for talking to the mice but the WM handles what happens when each button is pressed.

good thing i said "i'm pretty sure" 😛

<< This is great news.

Did you find deb packages for bbconf?

http://bbconf.sourceforge.net/download.php

Other than the mouse thing (which isnt a problem for normal people 😉) is there really anything that needs to be added to bb?

*slaps n0cmonkey silly*

Hey, I may be ambidextrous, but that doesn't mean yet that I'm not 'normal' for using the mouse with my left hand! 😛

<< is there really anything that needs to be added to bb? >>

Yes, how about ease of configuration and customization? Compared to KDE/Gnome and various other WM's, that's what's lacking most with BB.

Ill leave this one alone 😛

Its easy. I open vi and make a few changes. For a small WM like blackbox pretty and "easy" gui crap isnt necessary. Its overkill. Why overcomplicate things with silly little tools? So, anything that is added should be functional, not just something to configure some silly part for you.

Okay, I surrender 🙂

But how about improving the taskbar of BB? During the short time I used it, I found it to be the least intuitive taskbar I've ever seen. To be honest, I found it impossible to work with. And what's wrong with the taskbar every single WM out there uses?
Shees.. talk about overcomplicating things...

I dont think its overcomplicated, I think its simple and functional. I like the way it works. Nothing special, but not too much. As far as the taskbars every other wm uses, what taskbar are you talking about? The one IceWM uses? The one Enlightenment uses? The one Window Maker uses? The more you make it look and feel and act like another WM the more you would probably realize that you can just use that other WM.

n0c, when referring to the single taskbar-type just about every single WM uses, I mean the taskbar with one 'start'-button, some icons to quickly launch certain programs, access a shell, virtual desktops etc., plus some room for the running programs and the time.

That's the type of taskbar which is the most common, because it's easy, it's functional and above all, it's efficient.

It is easy for most, but I have trouble keeping track of programs in those bars. Too many things open on one desktop and Im screwed. I also explained (in this thread or another) why I dont like the start button thing. I wont bash it, like I said, its just not my style. I like the functionality, efficiency, and ease of use of the way blackbox is setup now. If you want the "taskbar" you mentioned, why not use a more "full-featured" WM?

I'm actually considering using IceWM, or another lightweight WM. I don't use the startbutton because I use symlinks, so that I won't have to find my way through countless menus.

Of course, I feel at home with just a CLI in front of me as well, so that's no surprise 🙂

i never even use the bb toolbar. it just sits there underneath my apps, the only time i use it is to see what time it is. for launching apps, i use grun (assigned to a key combo) or a terminal if theres one sitting there. for switching tasks, i use alt+tab or i shade my current window and grab another one with my mouse. the one thing (and this wouldnt necessarily have to be a part of bb, its just something i'd like to have) i'd like to have would be a button that is 1pixelX1pixel and in preferably (for me at least) the bottom right corner, always on top, that i can click on and get a menu of active apps i can switch to. oh and for switching workspaces, i use bbkeys and assign ctrl+left/right arrows to navigate workspaces.

but yeah, the bb toolbar is just a petty clock to me.

There there people, lets all get along, there's room for every WM 🙂

I use lots of different WM's depending on the computer, on weaker comps, I tend to use BB, since it just works, its damn fast, and... well thats it, what more do you need? 😛

On the comp Im typing this on, Im using KDE with quite a bit of eye candy turned on, heck its an AXP 1.5 GHz, with half a gig of memory, I dont need to save 10 MB of memory.

And on a mid end box, I'd use WindowMaker, really nice WM and yet it's pretty slim when it comes to memory footprint and such.

Why can't we all get along?

Oh and yes, screw them lefthanders 😀

isnt KDE's wm called kwin?

the whole reason i use bb is because contrary to all of the trendy little E zealots, i think it looks really good. way better than any overly-trying-to-look-good E theme, and same goes with any other bitmap-based wm. all of the themes just bore me. but bb looks good as hell to me, i'd rather use 80-90% of bb themes over another wm's themes, and also it's easy to make bb themes and they look good. also, after i start up X, bb loads, and then its done, in about a second. that is nice to me considering i cant leave it running 24/7 (g/f uses windows).

<< isnt KDE's wm called kwin? >>

You're talking semantics here, whatever dude 🙂

I like KDE, cause aside from the obvious flashy eye candy, it's extremely well thought out.
To me, Blackbox lies right in the thin line between CLI and GUI, it's a great thing for computers with little memory, or very slow CPU's, heck, I'd even considder installing it on the Sun sun boxes that we use at work(the ones that have X that is).

But for a serious workstation, I must say I like KDE better, and besides, some of the programs that come with it are VERY nice.
Been a KDE user for about as long as I can remember, I guess thats since v 1.0 😉

Have you checked out RatPoison by the way?
About as minimalistic as you can get with X 🙂

i've heard of ratpoison, never tried it or seen it, those screenshots look pretty....uh i dont know the word to use....

anyways, i need something more than THAT
