Looks as though Dell is sticking with Intel

But an option for AMD could possibly lower those prices some. I really don't see why they don't offer it. What's wrong with giving the customers a choice?

In a way, this is good, because I can see Dell slurping up a large portion of AMD's chip output if they did start using their stuff. That would mean less availability on the OEM market for guys like us. 😉

Thankfully Intel isn't like Microsoft. I mean, I do like to see AMD suceed but simply to secure it's future. I like to see Intel do well enough to do the same (I'm hoping Via can stay in the CPU market for the same reason as well). Microsoft however just seems to try too many sneaky backdoor techniques to the point that I'm amazed that they've not received stronger goverment regulation.

If you don't see a relation between MS and Intel... Personally I like the competition the current market is providing, but the reality is, Intel can weather the storm better due to their large capital (and no doubt those monthly payments from Michael Dell 😀)

I think if the market continues to decline (as well as Dell's sales), you'll see AMD processors powering Dell desktops and notebooks. It's only a matter of time.

Dell is probably the best place to look if your looking for a Laptop. They are the only ones shipping a Laptop with a 32MB GeForce2 Go chip. I would have loved to see Dell bring the Athlon4 to their Inspiron 8000 line of notebooks. Athlon 4 + GeForce2 Go is what I call a "desktop replacement". Looks like I'm gonna have to settle for a Tualatin/Almador + GeForce2 Go laptop, and spend $500 more than what a Athlon 4 would've cost🙁 Damn Dell, stop being a b!tch! Your the #1 Computer company!

Intel: Mr. Dell representative, I've heard rumors that you're planning on shipping machines with AMD processors in them.

Dell: Well, Mr. Intel representative, we've been considering it...

Intel: You know, Mr. Dell representative, there's a <cough> shortage of Intel processors these days. Dell has always been a valued customer and Intel has always made sure to keep Dell fully stocked with Intel chips. Wouldn't it be a shame if there just weren't enough Intel processors available to supply Dell's needs?

Dell: You know, Mr. Intel representative, that rumor you heard was just a rumor. We have no intention whatsoever of shipping machines with AMD processors in them.

If you don't believe this happens, you are downright naive.

It has absolutely nothing to do with getting enough chips, or the "First" ones from a given batch. It has everything to do with PRICING. If you don't think Dell gets a hell of a volume discount, as well as significant advertising revenue from Intel, you are not only naive but foolish.

I don't think Intel would short Dell any CPUs if they were to go with AMD processors -- but you can bet your ass that they'd have to pay more per CPU and that the cushy advertising $$ would disappear.

Wingznut PEZ,

<< Despite what theinquirer and other sites said. >>

The Inquirer and Register have never said Dell *would* use AMD chips, only that they were *considering* them. Dell periodically leaks these things to make sure Intel knows that they can't screw with them. These latest round of rumors are stronger than ever. It looks like Dell is upping the ante and trying to pressure Intel some more.

<< Not really, considering Dell is overpriced >>

not really, but if you want to believe that, its cool. its really only cheaper if you're not buying the same stuff, i.e. AMD instead of intel or you're "procuring" software. office is very expensive.

Even if DEll used AMD's chips, would they gain more customers? If equal amout of costomers remained, then Dell wont be making more money because DEll will be selling AMD platforms for a lower price. So my guess is that dell will only make more money if they gain more costomers, not just by switching. Infact, they might even lose moeny if they changed to use AMD because of the testing they go through, the advertising.... So will they gain more market by using AMD? My guess is not because whether they use AMD or not, costomers will still buy DELL - note DELL, not INtel or AMD.
