Looking to upgrade

It is finally time to upgrade the old CPU and MB. I just had my work notebook replaced with an A64 4000+ /w 1GB Ram and a mobile ATI x700 and it is making my home system seem like a real dog now. I haven't really been keeping up with current hardware (even had to create a new account here). Currently I have a water cooled xp2700 @ 2.6 /w 1GB Corsair DDR500 and an AGP 6800GT @ 450/1100. I was just going to get a 3700+, but now I am starting to consider the X2 3800+ also. I was wondering if I would really see any benefit going to multi-core. I use the system mainly for gaming, but I always have Winamp and Twonkyvision running in the background. I usually shutdown any other programs (except big downloads) I may have open when playing a game. Is it worth getting the X2 or will the 3700+ be more than adequate for my usage? I will probably OC at some point too if that is a concern too.

dual core is definatly going to make a difference with multiple process running as the OS can assign different tasks to different 'cpu's' to improve speed and power.

If you have the money, and you multitask, its great today. Since you have an Nvidia video cards, they now have multi-threaded drivers that will help 2%-50% in games. I think most were 5-10% gains. And tomorrows games may be like todays rendering software where you get up to 100% improvement.
