Looking to upgrade PC

Looking to upgrade to an AMD 64 system, somewhere in the 3000-3400+ range, but i would love to get socket 939 for a future upgrade path. however, the only board for 939 right now seems to be the Asus A8V delux board, and i dont need everything it offers. Are there any other boards out there? specifically and 939 Nforce boards? or when will they be available?

also, what processor gives best bang for buck right now in the 3K+ range?

and maybe a 17" LCD reccomendation. 172X?
I am currently on a syncmaster 700NF and would love to go LCD to save space for college. In all, i am looking to spend <800$ on the upgrades.

I am also in the process of upgrading. I have settled on an Athlon 64 2800+ with a ASRock motherboard, which is a basic socket 754 solution. As you can see, I am definitely going for value with my selections and I believe they offer the most bang for the buck. Both of these products can be purchased for under $275 total at Newegg. On the other hand, the socket 939 solutions are gonna take a while to hit the market and when they do, they'll have a hefty price premium.

Currently, your best choice would be to just get a socket 754, 3000+ and an MSI K8N Neo Platinum, or the Chaintech if you're insistent on saving money. With the lowest socket 939 CPU being $500, the money you save will more than cover the motherboard you'll have to buy when you upgrade again later on. No idea when nForce3 s939 boards will be out (/theoretically/ they should already be, but they show no signs of being, so it's rather hard to predict), but there's a good chance s939 will get a price drop and/or lower models when Intel comes out with Socket T and a 3.6GHz Prescott, which is iirc on June 21.

socket 754 is going to be with us for a while, so you should not worry about future upgrading paths. The only chipset to get for the athlon64 platform is the nforce2 250, it is the only one gaurenteed to have a working PCI/AGP lock. Plust, they are priced well. If i were buying today, here is what i would get.

althon 64 3200+ with 1mb of l2 cache, should make up for any advantages the dual channel memory on the 939 would offer. $274

Chaintek nForce3 250, $92, dont buy an expensive socket 754 when the cheap ones will get the job done just as well.

thats what i have been thinking of getting schaden, to bad i cant get any decisive answers on an LCD, i would love the 172x but the 6 bit panel is turning me off. However, i dont know how much of an issue that really will be.

I wouldn't be "worried" about using Socket 754. If you're looking for something in the 3000-3400 range, you have to use Socket 754, because Socket 939 chips start at 3500.

Now, if you were going to get a 3500+, I would wait a couple weeks for Socket 939 nForce 3 250Gb boards to show up if I could, only because of the dual-channel, and by then the 3500's should be a little cheaper, too.
