Looking to upgrade CPU/RAM/MoBo

Alright, I'm running an Athlon X2 3800+, 2gb DDR, and an eVGA sli motherboard. I'm looking at upgrading just these key components right now, with possible upgrades to come later. So far what I've got listed below is where I'm at after being out of PC Hardware for a while, so any advice or suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks!

BTW, this rig will mainly be used for gaming and other mindless tasks such as Internet & e-mail. A few real requirements are 2 PCI Express and at least 4 SATA with an IDE to boot.

Are you ganna be running SLI??? If not I would not get a 750i boards as the P45's are much more stable and overclock better. Something like this.

Also if you're building a gaming machine right now, I wouldn't go with anything less than 4GB even if you're running XP32. RAM is so cheap. No reason not to.

Are there any known issues with the 750i if running stock? Last I knew nVidia made a good chipset, but again...it's been a few years...

You're better off with the Q8300/P5Q SE+ setup than the X3 720 on a 790 board.

Q8200 mops the floor with X3 720 nearly across the board, on that page and the next 5. And note, that's a Q8200 not the Q8300 you're considering. For about $20 less than the 720 setup. No brainer in my mind.

D kinda went through the looking glass on that one - I guess he missed the X3 720 gaming and OC pages in his article. The Phenom II 920 is the comp to the OP's Q8300, anyway.


As much as I like that Gigabyte 790x if the OP needs SLI he could snag the MSI K9N2 SLI Platinum AM2+/AM2 NVIDIA nForce 750a SLI for $110AR.

But that 790x might mop the floor with it

My 780i is fine and overclocks decently enough, if you're running stock as long as the board doesn't have a serious stability issue (in which case they wouldn't sell many of the boards) it'll be fine.

Alright, that's kinda what I was thinking. I really just want a system that has a Quad Core CPU, SLI Capability, and a few other minor things. I'd like to keep the cost of motherboard/CPU/RAM around $300, but I also don't want to go with bottom end hardware lol

In anything truly multithreaded that quad will kick the X3 720 around.

And don't even get started on overclocking...

Same reason I wanted it when I built my current system...once my video card starts not being able to play current games, buy another and toss it in lol
