Looking to upgrade 2x 6850 toxic

So just as the topic states, I have 2 6850's in crossfire, and I was wondering what would be a good upgrade for me. I play at 1920x1080, and i think the fact that these cards only have 1gb of vram is holding me back at that resolution.

7950 OC or 7970. How much do you want to spend?

7970 Crossfire, or a Titan. Go large or go home ;) (Says the guy with a 7770)

Not really limited on how much to spend, but definitely not spending titan money lol. 7900 series has been catching my eye, needed a second opinion to confirm. Thanks for the help!

The HD7950 Boost at stock speeds would be slightly faster than your 6850 setup, except where VRAM is limiting you. That will increasingly be the case at ultra settings, so it's not a bad investment. That being said, I'd head straight to the HD7970 if you really aren't too concerned about sticking within the HD7950 price range.

I'd go with this Sapphire model for $390AR: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16814202008

It seems like it's still unlocked for overvolting, which is pretty important if you want to overclock significantly. Other models may not be as overclocking-friendly.

A 7950 stock would be a small upgrade at the lowest point. Once oced and with recent games, it would be a decent improvement. I would recommend a 7950 which suits your budget the best. However even a 660 or 7870 is overall better than what you have now.

7950 is a side grade imo.

7950 OC was a downgrade to 470 SLI OC which was a bit ahead of where you are.

Use smaa/fxaa, turn down textures if you have to, but I'd suggest waiting out this generation.

7950 isn't a downgrade with even a wild imagination. 2 6850s basically fall in btw a radeon 6970 and gtx 580. Tops gtx 580 oc. A stock 7950 pounces it.

Was to water cooled 470s, but I forgot they were overclocked 50% and AMD didn't enjoy that kind of OC'ing last gen.

I thought they were a few percent faster than the 580, like the 800MHz 7950 is?

7950 isn't that much faster than the 580 at stock, overclocks are never guaranteed.

Let's say 25-50% faster? No MPGU issues, but 6xxx seems to be doing better than 7xxx in that regard. I wouldn't go 7950 CF, so that leaves a marginal upgrade for $100 (sell 6850's for $100 ea), less ~$65 if you sold the games.

I guess it would be worth it, just don't expect a wow factor. Although I was seeing almost 1600mb at 1080p in some games with my 7950. Can't hurt if you can move the old cards and the games it's an effective upgrade for the money.

Yeah having more video memory would help in future games I would suspect. I use 2500MB+ in modded Skyrim @ 1080P :D

Yeah I was able to get vram thrashing to occur in modded skyrim at 1080p, the more I think about it the more it makes sense for him especially if you can move the games and old cards it's low enough now where you could do the move for a few bucks.

went from 6870 cf to a gtx 670 and it was a huge improvement. but it comes down to preferences, and what games you do play. i was looking at the 7970 when i was going to upgrade, but went with the 670 for physx instead. theres alot of options, id say gtx 660ti or better, or 7870 or better

The only issue the OP mentions is 1gig of vram.

it just comes down to how much willing to spend and preference. not really a fanboy to either but have been lovin the physx. i dont know if i would suggest a sli/cf setup after the microsudder prob i had before, it was annoying. will do some reading later and see if its still a common issue or not.

It seems to be an issue in some games to some people. Lots of people have multi gpu setups and really enjoy them. Some people can't stand using them at all. It's not the same for everyone. There's no one answer to the question that covers everyone.

Personally, I've never run multi gpu. All of the negative print about it would make me very hesitant to try it. The OP has his own 1st hand experience, though.

Yeah, i don't notice the microstutters most of the time. It's pretty much a non issue for me. It seems my subscription to this thread isn't right, because i didn't get any updates on posts :)

Sometimes i would get slowdown in gw2 with alot happening on the screen, and i think it's due to the 1gb of vram. I was planning on selling the 6850's to offset the cost, but amd is going to come out with the 8000 series in the second half of the year, so i'm a bit hesitant.

Once you go CrossFire/SLI like you already have, you're going to either have to wait a while to buy a single GPU card that will be a significant upgrade or pony up the money for another CFX/SLI setup.

As such, you need to actually decide if you want to deal with 2 GPUs or not anymore, regardless of the amount of money you want to spend.

I went from one single 6850 up to a 7950 (3 gb card) and really like it... didn't want to spend the extra for a 7970 at the time, but slightly OC'd the 7950 has gotten me great FPS.

for reference I get the following:
BF3 on ultra - 75-95 fps
Arma3 - highest settings with huge view distance - 45+ fps (just high settings is 60+)
Batman - 80+ fps
Tropico (not that it is taxing) - 200+ fps

I go the gigabyte card and even the stock cooler is quite quiet.

Makes sense. I think i'll just wait for the 8000 series and go single card.
