Looking to switch to Redhat 5

Been running freebsd w/o a hitch but it seems our dedicated server provided wants to start phasing it out. They offer RH5 and having used linux for the past 4 years, I HATE RH. I mainly hate YUM because I'm so used to having the ports system and then debian has apt-get which is 10x better than YUM. So, for those who use Centos (I would be using this on local developmental servers), has YUM improve?

Do I still have to go out and fetch dependencies myself?
 
yum's main function is to handle dependency resolution and fetching like apt so you'll be fine in that regard. yum isn't too bad, it was still slow as snot the last time I used it but it works. The main problem is finding repositories because compared to the repositories for Debian and FreeBSD, RHEL/CentOS comes with like no software.

I haven't had a chance to go through the extras and stuff in there but is it really anywhere close to the ~20,000 packages that Debian provides?

I could be wrong, but isn't CentOS identical to RHEL, with the Red Hat artwork removed?

Yep, that's pretty much the whole point of CentOS.

Before we go to far adrift, maybe 'LuckyTaxi' can explain this situation. 😉

AFAIK, you can run ANY OS YOU WANT on a dedicated server - it's your server, e.g. dedicated to your use!

IMHO, when it comes to enterprise servers - there's BSD... then there's everything else! I'd tell your ASP to go pound salt...

Then, again, maybe you don't have a TRUE dedicated server - just a VPS or something.

If that's the case, then the 'Big 4' (in order) are CentOS, Debian, Fedora Core, and Suse...

Of those, I would choose CentOS, but if you're more comfortable with Debian, go for it! However, BSD trumps them all!!!

Anyway, maybe you can explain why your provider is forcing you to switch OS on YOUR server - I don't get it...
 
We're leasing the servers, we're NOT co-locating them. Therefore, our choices are freebsd or RH 5. They recently installed freebsd but used 6.2. What's worst, they refuse to update it, though i could do it, if it happens to break along the way, they wouldn't support it. I would move to a different provider but it's not up to me.
