Bad idea.

Yea just like its a bad idea for 90% of the ecommerce sites out there.... My friends grandmother had him build her a site to sell some of her stuff on, her site gets TONS of views and she makes a lot of money off it, you just gotta advertise right and get word out of your site.

If you want EASY and don't mind paying a lot of fees then check out Yahoo! eCommerce.

Otherwise this will offer you the most flexibility (but there are still fees involved

1) Register domain
2) Web hosting
3) Shopping cart, there are a few free choices and some costing $99 and more.
4) Merchant account

You could use 2checkout, they have a free cgi based commerce script last time I checked (taht was a few years ago). Maybe they have a newer php based one by now...

It's not an easy decision to make, there are a lot of choices which will cost you $$$. Best to do your homework and read about all your options.

over the last few weeks, my wife has been getting feelers for setting up sites which would want to sell over the net using an e-commerce solution.
she does design and graphic work and has nada clue about the ecommerce stuff, but she is very willing to learn and I would also help her and the clients out.

Props to Rossman for the 4 easy steps as in
a) register domain
b) web hosting
c) shopping cart
4) merchant account.

as far as shopping carts and merchant accounts, which sites apart from the one mentioned here should I look into?
i'm not looking for a super low cost solution and niether am I looking for an expensive solution....just middle of the range.
also, can someone point me to a fellow At'er's website where they have set up a shopping cart and such!
thanks much, this forum rocks!

Shopping cart:
osCommerce
Zen Cart
X Cart

Commerce:
2checkout.com
Paypal.com
CDGCommerce.com gives you merchant account capabilities and protection but minimum monthly fees.
