looking to spend ~2500 on amd based system.... ideas?

i have a buddy who works for the navy, and they will give him roughly 2500 to build a workstation with. it is especially cool because they will actually let him build it himself, rather than be forced to buy dell or something. it will be primarily an engineering workstation, but i want to let him play some games on it too, since they let him keep it after his coop is done with.

he already has a 21 inch monitor so that is taken care of, i'd really like to get all the components from the same vendor (like mwave for example) and i want to build an amd based system. p4 machines are not worth the money, and i wont consider one unless there is some crazy price break really soon.

i want to plan this out as if i were buy it today, so please no suggestions on 'if you wait a month...'

i figure i can get him a gig of ddr ram, a 15k rpm scsi drive, 16x scsi plex burner, a big ide hd or two, sblive soundcard, NIC, and of course the fastest tbird available right now.

need suggestions on what to get:
tbird mobo
scsi card
video card
case (i'm thinking large server case, perhaps antec)

i think that new tyan mobo nfs4 mentioned looks quite badass. i didnt know it was in stores yet... i think that takes care of a few of my questions.

yeah go to pricewatch.com and then you can find pricing for all the components you need, I think that the k7 master is a mobo with 4 dimm so you could put 4 256 meg sticks of ddr ram in there (the 512 sticks are very expensive)

with that much you could build to systems 🙂 anyways the Tyan MB I think is out or nearly out, that would take care of a lot of things. Get a X15 HD, SCSI DVD-ROM, SCSI burner, a video card with GOOD 2D quality. **not nvidia** if he is going to be using a 21" monitor, 2d will be a very good thing to have.

Win2k pro and a 1GB of ram. A really nice sound card and some ide drives for storage.

Scratch the monitor from that above system since he doesn't need it, maybe put the money into another drive or a larger one if he needs that. Also does anyone know if the onboard video can be disabled on that board so he can put something better in it?

2 ibm 75 gig 7200rpm hd's, 4 sticks 256 meg pc2100 ddr ram, 2 1400 mhz amd athlon (out in a few days), the tyan dual amd processor mobo, hercules game theatre xp, geforce3 vid card, lian-li case (pc60, pc68, or pc70), klipsch pro media speakers, should be a good starting point for the system

Make sure to get the HUGE power supply from Enermax, the EG651P-VE (530W). It's not like you'll be strapped for cash here!

Also, I'd get the following:
Lian-Li PC-70
Seagate X15
3x Seagate Cheetah 73.4 10K's with the X15. Why not go all SCSI when money's not a problem??
Go with the Tyan dual amd board that Atlantean is talking about with a pair of 1.4GHz tbirds.
GF3 for sure
SCSI DVD-ROM (maybe IDE since they're faster up to now)
Yamaha 2200 SCSI CDRW (the 20/10/40 one once it really gets out in a few days)
4x 256 DDR SDRAM PC2100 (or PC2400 if you can find them)
Fastest SCSI CD-ROM available

Antec SX1030 case (comes with 300W PS)
Microsoft Natural KB and Intellimouse Optical
Adaptec 29160 SCSI card
Pioneer 10X DVD SCSI
Plextor 12/10/32 SCSI burner
Seagate X15 18GB 15000rpm SCSI HD
60GB IBM 60GXP IDE HD
MSI K7 Master
1.33 ghz AMD Athlon
Taisol 760 HS/fan
4x Crucial PC2100 256MB DDR ram
Elsa Gladiac 920 Geforce 3 64MB
TB Santa Cruz or Hercules Gametheater XP
Intel or Linksys NIC
floppy

You guys don't know the meaning of restraint, do you?

If you want to fill up that $400 in my system, I would suggest getting another Samsung 900NF and toss in a cheap PCI video card. That's not restraint, but at least two monitors is useful, unlike the SCSI Zip.

i was thinking a matrox g450 would be very good for the job. what about some other high end non gaming cards that would be good for cad and engineering work?

so far i kinda like sugadaddy and red's suggestions best as a whole.
