Looking to refresh my HD 7850

I've been upgrading my computer one component at a time. I kept most of my components for 5 years (a record for me !) with my overclocked Core I5 2500k build. Last year I changed motherboard, CPU and RAM only to a Threadripper 1950x.

I have now upgraded all my SSDs to nVME and Intel Optane. So I'd like to upgrade my video card.

I still play some old games, I don't need a top of the line video card. But I find my HD7850 quite noisy and I think it is that component that is guilty of freezing my PC whenever I try to shut down or reboot.

Do you have any recommendation ? A performance boost would be a bonus, but I really one something silent and low power.

Right now the best value for money is by far the RTX 2060 in terms of mid range. You said you play mostly older games, so you don't need top of the line ultra expensive card like the 2080 or 2080ti, while the 2060 will actually run all games at max settings and 60+fps easily at 1080p resolution.

If you want something that is low power, yet still has enough oomph to run most games at close to max settings at 1080p, then a GTX 1060 6GB would be your best choice. It consumes 120W at stock, overclocked up to 150W.

The RTX 2060 is $350, while the GTX 1060 6GB is $250. Personally for just $100 more I'd go for the RTX 2060, it's much faster, so it will easily hold you over for 4-5 years.

Well, for those criteria, a RTX 2070 would be pretty good performance, fairly low power. Maybe the 2080 even, but more power. Here is my best choice for $850 https://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?item=N82E16814487404. Thats an EVGA 2080. If you want something less with one 8 pin power plug, thus 2070 for $528 should do: https://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=9SIA6ZP8HT8332
Thanks Mark. But I think a 500$ GPU would be overkill for me, unlike my TR 1950 which got high usage.

In that case you could get an RX 570 for under 200 which has pretty low power but I don't know exactly what the max power is. I'm currently running a Saphire 570 and it works great. A 1060 would also be another good choice for lower power and good performance.

GTX 1660Ti fits the bill perfectly for your requirements.. it's launching next week, with ~ GTX 1070 level performance and less than 150 Watt power draw, for ~$280.

Or you can even purchase the non Ti 1660, which would launch a few weeks later.. with GDDR5 RAM & 1280 cores vs 1560 (in the Ti)

I'd suggest the 1660Ti version though as it's the full chip with 6GB GDDR6.

In any case, get a current gen product (Instead of 1060/1070).

If you're considering a last gen product, then purchase an AMD 570 or 580 8GB RAM version and use it with the silent BIOS option, which should reduce clocks, noise and power draw. You can manually reduce the voltage also, to make them power efficient.

Both can be had for ~$180/200..

rx 570 with a decent custom cooler should fit your requirements and cost very little.

I've got a pair of G4560 rigs, one of which I am refurbishing now.. I had initially put in an "OLOy" 4GB DDR4-2400 DIMM (only $22.99 @ Newegg), which runs at 2667 1.2V, not great timings, like CAS18 or something. But then, I decided to install Win7 64-bit, AND Win10 64-bit, both to the same 240GB SSD (half and half). So, while I was installing Win7 Updates, the commit charge got above 6GB, so I figured, I should boost the RAM. I put in a Team Group Elite DDR4-2400 8GB stick, and that one overclocks fairly successfully, to 2800 1.35V, timings CAS18. Unfortunately, it hung restarting from Win10, so I don't know if that speed is completely kosher. I did run a CPU-Z Bench stress-test for like 10 minutes, while web browsing, installing Malwarebytes and scanning, etc., and it didn't crash or BSOD or appcrash. Oh, when I re-installed Win10 64-bit, I also had the RAM at 2800, and it installed successfully, and seems to run fine.

Anyways, if I were to sell the G4560 as a gaming rig, with 8GB (or I could double it up to 16GB) of the Team RAM, and the 240GB SSD (115GB for each OS), would it be better to put in a GTX 1660 / Ti, or just throw in one of my RX 570 4GB (XFX) cards? Looking for something that is Fortnite-capable. Although from my other thread in PC Gaming, it seems that CPU may be a little laggy for Fortnight?

The RX 570 underclocked seems a much better deal than a GTX 1050. You say it's an option in BIOS ? Can we underclock it with amd software or msi afterburner? Haven't played with those for a while

RX 570 with with 16GB system RAM would pair well with that CPU.

Fortnite is very scalable and this would make a competent gaming system for similar games (pretty much any game at 1080p)

Would appreciate if you could please share your input in regards to tweaking an RX 570 to reducing voltage / power draw. (Must have experimented with these settings in Wattman when turning them for mining).

This will be helpful in answering OP's last post.

Thats a Wayy better deal; 570 is in a different league compared to 1050/1050Ti, in terms of GPU capability..

You can tweak these settings in AMDs Wattman (comes bundled with the Driver software suite)

Also, checkout this 45 Watt RX 560 (for GTX 1050 level performance but better power efficiency)

I just turned the power limit down to -10% in Wattman when I was mining, otherwise, my cards would draw too much power, and sometimes reboot.

I never quite figured out how to reduce voltages in Wattman cleanly, they had like 7 steps that needed increasing voltages, and I never knew what the limits were, so I didn't touch those.

The OP should wait till the 22nd for the GTX 1660 and 1660 ti launches next week on the 22nd. These will not only be a good card for the money(both cards), it will cause the price of all midrange Radeons to fall hard. With the GTX 1660 performing at rx 590 levels for 220-230 dollars, expect the rx 590 to fall to near 200. The Ti version of this card will be a little over a gtx 1070 for 280 dollars. With both these cards on the marketplace, radeon cards will become truly cheap. The price of the rx 580 to fall to 150 and the rx 570 to fall to 110 dollars. Right now, the price of the RX 580/rx 590/GTX 1060 are at price fixing price levels. Artificially inflated prices to sell old stock at high profits.

With a new card with new silicon and technology coming, the old generation is going to fall hard for prices. The only card worth considering if your willing to sacrifice performance is the RX570. Everything else is overpriced.

I feel that way as well. Sadly, I paid $300 ea., for my two 8GB RX 570 (MSI Gaming X and MSI Armor MK2) cards, back in the mining days.

The RX 570 is a very versatile, and not too expensive GPU. If the market gets flooded with $110 RX 570 cards, so much the better. Maybe then they would start to put a nail in the coffin of those over-priced $180 GTX 1050 ti 4GB cards. Ridiculous!

So true, just a moment ago I was looking at 1070 & 2060 prices. $350ish on average and they perform about or slightly higher than double my 280x. The cards are 2-4 years newer and only a little more than double the performance.
Video cards have been such a disappointment for the last 5 or 6 years.

I think the reason why the GTX 1050 ti is so overpriced is because it is largely not produced anymore and there was not an over production due to mining because it was never a mining card. In addition the laptop market is able to absorb much of the GP107 chips unlike the more gamer focuses polaris/gp106 which are too powerful for the mainstream market.

So much like the left overs GTX 1080/1080 ti, the GTX 1050 ti current pricing is not so much a reflection of their market value in terms of performance but their scarcity.

I'm looking for the MSI Gaming X RX-470 or 570, this card stood out on the places I've looked at because it's more quiet.
