Hello.

I'm looking to buy a OEM version of Windows XP Pro from Newegg and now see (don't remember seeing it in the past) that they require a hardware purchase with the drive. What will qualify me for a hardware purchase? A fan? A heatsink? I'm looking for the cheapest alternative because I don't really need anything at the moment.

Also.. I see the academic version of the software. What qualifies me for the academic version? Do I have to fax my school id or something? How does Newegg check to make sure that you're a student or teacher?

TIA,

Sal

Why don't you call them & ask?

Many places will count most anything - Case screws, a power cable, etc.

I thought it was at least a hard drive, but if there are rules doesn't mean they get played by.

Newegg changed the rules that anything that could be considered a peripheral didn't count. They said cd/dvd drives, floppy drives, mice, keyboards and cases were out. You needed to but a processor, hdd, mobo, etc to qualify as hardware. I don't know if they keep that policy, or just state it to be safe, though. :D

the last time i order oem software i ask that question which was about 3 month or so and the answear was anything. Also if u ordered a hardware in the last 30 days then u don't need to purchase hardware with oem software.

there was some loophole in the license that allows them to sell the academic version to pretty much anyone a while back. dunno if they've fixed it
