...but not sure which to get. I've looked for reviews on these drives but haven't been able to find anything substantial. Anybody know which is best, etc?

Thanks!

Dear god, why?? That's so fast, so expensive and so unnecessary...get something like 16x and be reasonable. Spend the rest on some RAM or something. ;)

512MB DDR RAM :) I've heard the Lite On 16x is very nice, but I figure why not grab the 24x as long as it's out there.

How long does a 16x burner take to burn an 70-80min audio disc?

Thanks everybody :)

cdrinfo has some good reviews on drives. the only one that can burn safedisc2 is the acer 20x, but it performs about 16x in real life, and reads no subchannel, best wait for the plextor to hit the US

1x = 150KB/sec (77 minutes for 700MB)
2x = 300KB/sec (38 minutes for 700MB)
4x = 600KB/sec (19 minutes for 700MB)
8x = 1200KB/sec (~10 minutes for 700MB)
12x = 1800KB/sec (~6 minutes for 700MB)
16x = 2400KB/sec (~5 minutes for 700MB)
20x = 3000KB/sec (~4 minutes for 700MB)
24x = 3600KB/sec (3.2 minutes for 700MB)

If you ask me, the sweet spot is right around 12x.

*give about 30 seconds for leadin/leadout

The sweet spot is definitely 12x, unless you want IDE and the 16x Plextor is unmatched in that category. I prefer SCSI so I'll stick with the 12/10/32S. 20/24x writers are a joke because they use "zones" and only write close to or at their max rated speed on the latter areas of the disc. They don't actually sustain 20x or 24x write speeds across the entire disc. I don't see the big deal between 12x and 24x myself, either. I find 12x more than fast enough. I browse a few threads here on AT and a disc is finished. I suppose if I was reproducing tens of discs daily those 2-3 minutes would add up, but...
