Looking to pre-order a car

So I've always bought used cars now with the new Fusion that comes out in March 2009

So if I goto my local dealership and want to order one do I need to bring a down payment or is that just something I'd wait til the car actually arrives at the lot? I know it seems like such a dumb question but I honestly dont know...

Well, I don't know anything about the car. Is there a reason to believe that it's going to be in such high demand that they will be difficult to obtain?

Ford is in far better shape than the other domestics, but I would not give the dealer anything (if they would even accept it) now until you're ready to make the purchase.

I know that nobody believes this, but those of us in SE Michigan are very aware of the inter-dependency between car companies and their suppliers. If, or example GM were to go down, the others are going down too. It's too risky to give a dealer any money now. It may just evaporate.

Edit: You're in Michigan too! Doh!

Yes I am and when I drive to work I can see Ford World HQ and when I'm at work I can see GM World HQ from the windows...besides the my father worked for Ford for 38 years, and his brother works for Chrysler so I'm acutely aware of the inter-dependency...unfortunately.

I don't think the Fusion in general will be 'that' hot but who knows. I just wanna start poking my head around now. Because I will be buying one.

Get with a fleet dealer at a dealership and arrange to put in an order. The normal salesmen will try to get you into something off the lot.

But it may take longer than you think. Delays caused my dad's '99 Ram w/ a 6 speed to be delayed for 8 months, but from what I've heard he has one of the two '99 Rams with 6 speeds in California. Normally ordering a car takes 8 weeks, so you wouldn't likely get it until around May anyways.

Ford's update to the Fusion looked great in person...I really think that they did a good job and will finally be truly competitive in that segment. Better line of engines, a 6-speed transmission...now to see what the driving tests say.

That car actually looks really nice. I like it.

That said, why would you pre-order it? I'm sure they won't be that difficult to come by.

What he said. I'm just not understanding the need to pre-order the car. The Fusion isn't some limited edition car, like the Mustang Bullitt (which didn't even sell out). Maybe the OP wants it configured in a very particular way?

Actually its the hybrid version I'd wanna get and since they are only making 25,000 of those a year i might need to hop on early. I know alot of people say it's not work it but I get Ford A plan through my dad. Although I was talking to the dealer about it and I might get the 3.5L Sport version if the MPG is good.

Moot point anyways since the dealer said they are basically in the dark until the NAIAS. He did give me an order guide so at minimum I know what I want option wise if I order either a hybrid or a sport edition. And yes I want to order it, unless they have my exact option package + color on the lot.

Oh, OK, that explains alot. Thanks for clarifying, and good luck with your purchase. What kind of discount does the Ford A plan get you?

Depends alot on what you are buying but if I got a Fusion Hybrid at T&T, destination, any options I'm guessing it'd be just shy of $30,000. With A-plan I could get it down to 24-25,000(so says my father I had to call him 😛) And realistically the sport edition is only about $1,000 less than the hybrid so for less power/sportyness I could at minimum have some MPG bragging 😛 I'm really waiting for more specs to come out, specifically the final MPG numbers plus the final gear ratios, weight etc etc
