What is the minimum FPS that is generally acceptible for a game to run without terrible lag? I'm looking for a laptop and I'm looking at some with x700s, and benchmarks show them to run slightly over 20 FPS on Age of Empires III, the game I'd like to play. Will slightly over 20 FPS work?

IMO, 20+ frames in strategy games is acceptable since there is no fast paced action or a need for twitch reflexes. In general, I would try to keep games in general at a 35-40 frame average (especially for FPSs).

I like 30 as a solid number. But for RTS you should be alright, below 20 woule be pretty bad though

As said those rates are fine for a game like that... But keep in mind with setting adjustments you can probably make any game run alright with a relatively modern card like that. A GeForce2MX on the other hand, no dice! :p

Well, due to the human eye having the capability of recognizing ~25fps before it gets smooth, that's the magical barrier not to recognize lags ;)

Just as a reference, running in DX7 mode, my 64MB MX440 ran Age of Empires 3 perfectly fine with no lag whatsoever no matter how many units were on the screen(sometimes several hundred in intentionally huge fights).

I ike 40+ in FPS. RTS can get to 20 and be alright, same with rpg like WoW.
