Seeing that your wife has a PhD in immunology, my opinion is that the best research is being done at MCgill, U of T and Western in London depending on the exact area. Mcgill is very prestigious in the Molecular Biology field and Montreal is a spectacular city.
Toronto is also a great city but GL is coorect in saying that the Urban sprawl is horrendous, it is testbook defintion of urban sprawl and is worse than Detroit and Chicago.
I have no idea what the sprawl is like in Montreal. You should research into that.
The Guelph Waterloo area is soon to be overconsumed with populations problems as this region is referred to as the technology triangle. This area is booming and Toronto's sprawl is rapidly approaching the outskirts of Guelph. Rush hour traffic between Guelph and T.O. has tripled since 1995..... (thought north of Guelph is still pieceful and farmlike and you can spot beuatiful country homes up that way)
I think the best would be to find a place that would offer a package deal for the both of you, that way you aren't heading to 2 different directions, wasting your lives away on trains, subways, sitting in traffic and just generally not seeing each other.
That is ma deux cents.
