The thing that ive always liked to do in life is to protect people the only problem with that is that being a cop doesnt pay enough. I would like to be in the ATF, FBI, CIA or something along those lines because they will pay more and still fit into the criteria of something that I would like to do for the rest of my life. I was wondering what kind of degree id need to get into one of these jobs? I was looking into criminology as a possibility. Anyone have any other suggestions?

Thanks,
Rob

You almost need a masters to get into the FBI now. Helps if you speak arabic, too.

And it takes more than just book smarts. Moreso connections + luck.

I'd tell you now and look at something else if money's your issue here. Because it obviously is.

you could have a different degree than criminal justice. they usually take accounting majors regularly too. i'd suggest checking their website or the CIAs and look at what is needed.

Here will be a good start for you. FBI

You can study anything but science majors are good and expert knowledge of Arabic languages are in hot demand right now.

From what i can remember, you have to be between 21 and 35, in good shape and health, clean record, good moral character, ect and ect.

Just follow the link then go to employment section and check it out for yourself.

All of the corporate scandals bring in a larger demand for people with business knowledge/experiance, such as Accounting. I think just about any major could fit in somewhere. I talked to a CIA recruiter not long ago and they also a wide range as you can imagine. They have internships in the D.C. area too.

A bachelors and 2-3 years of work experience is a good place to start. The FBI doesn't hire cops as much as they used to--it's more accountants and lawyers now. If you try another agency (DEA, ATF, etc.) I'd HIGHLY recommend working on the streets as an officer for a few years first. The kind of experience you get out there far outweighs anything you learn in the classroom (although a ton of that is needed too).

If you have any more specific questions about LE feel free to ask.

Computer knowledge is a hot thing for them right now, especially in security. A direct quote from a recruiter from the FBI, "It's easier to train a computer security person to be an agent than it is to train an agent to be a computer security person."

Sounds good to me!

Well, the "moral character" part might be an issue. ;)

About 16 years ago, I applied for a position with the CIA. The application paperwork was long, long, long. Plus, I was called in for a battery of tests (polygraph, psychological exam, interview, etc.) After taking a few days of vacation from my other job, it was an exhaustive process. In the end, I wasn't offered a position. However, with the way I felt after the polygraph, I didn't really care if they offered a position to me or not.

There was an article on CNN.COM a long time ago about FBI agents not making enough money (~40K) and the vulnerability to bribes and working for the otherside (i.e. Hanssen). I tried to find the article, but I couldn't find it.

An FBI recruiter came to my school when I was an undergrad, and they are looking for accountants, lawyers, and people who speak another language.

I looked into working for the FBI, but they don't pay that much and the travel is alot.

THey don't make a lot of money either. And due to the fact that they tend to live in larger (read: expensive) cities, local law enforcement might actually have a higher standard of living.

my good friend has an accounting degree and passed all parts of CPA exam on first try. He is currently working for the CHP and is hoping to someday fly one of their helicopters (already has license) and then move into the fbi from there.
