You are very welcome! Just ask and someone will try to answer your questions - we have quite a few skilled crunchers around here.
For set@home please check out the optimized applications over at http://lunatics.kwsn.net/ - these apps use the math optimizations of the CPU more efficiently then tha standard app. You can gain 15 - 50% more credits ...
For F@H check some other threads - we have some very knowledgable members here ... and links are in the stats-thread.
Anyhow, welcome to the TaEm! 🙂

Thanks, I was curious if you guys run into a lot of people overheating their systems lol.. I'm thinking of making a quick sell on my current rig, and getting some money for it and going up to an I7 and 470/5870.. I got good circulation in my case (Maxtop Signature Series) but could see the PSU being under some strain going full blast 100% of the time lol..

I got an OCZ600SXS which does fine but it's by far not a top quality PSU like a Seasonic or Corsair.

Welcome to the TeAm, carnage519. 🙂

Computers are running a little warm but the temps are still within reason. The apartment on the other hand is most certainly overheating. Almost makes you want to tone down the crunching.
Almost, obviously.

I have never had any problems of overheating the comps - unless a CPU-fan stopped working - but that was ages ago.In summer I have some 33 - 34ºC in my computer room, and the comps crunch happily anyhow.
I keep the comps as dust free as I can (cleaning them once every 3 - 4 months), see that the fans work OK and monitor the CPU-temps by using SpeedFan or CoreTemp.

I always get aftermarket cooling for CPU's (high end) and always get double-wide video cards with a good cooling solution. Also, I always run the fan on my video cards preset @~55%-70% depending on the noise. And I run 100% fan on the CPU.

Never had a cooling problem.

I will probably be using my PC for the space science projects going on.. Milky Way, SETI etc.. Not sure if I'll end up doing the protein folding stuff again.. I may be selling the 4890, and getting a Thuban possibly.. or does Intel CPUs produce higher results in the Milky Way @ Home, and SETI @ home? I read some benchmarks about ATI cards being better but for those certain folding projects, but nothing regarding Phenom 2 vs I5/I7

I have both Phenoms x4 and i5 and i7 CPUs. I find the i5-750, the I7-860 and i7-920 more efficient than Phenom x4. They also run cooler.
In seti@home NVIDIA-GPUs are efficient - very efficient - for certain WUs.
In MilkyWay the double precision ATI-cards (57xx and 58xx) are just tremendously efficient: with one card you can easily 40K - 100K credits per day depending on which card, how much they crunch and how much you game! (see e.g. in TeAm Anadtech in MilkyWay the TeAm mate Faxon ...) In a computer with an i7 CPU and two ATI 58xx cards you can probably crunch 200 - 250K credits/day ... You'll probably need an at least 850W PSU though ...

Ugh I got some serious GPU overheating issues in my case.. Hit 100c when I remoted in while ago.

XFX Radeon 4890
OCZ 650 Watt PSU
Maxtop Signature Series.. Side 120mm/top 120mm

yeah.. you can't remote in when running the GPU client.. the GPU gets disabled for crunching.

also, you need to go into the catalyst control panel and adjust your fan speed higher for the gpu. I have my fan for my 4890 set to 80% and it sits around 70C under load.

also, the ati 48xx series of cards are double precision capable too.

I downclocked my Core/Memory 100mhz to stop it from getting up to 100c.. It's not sitting around 89-90c under load with 100% on the fan. Here is my case I am using

It used to be very good back in the days of cooler GPUs.. The thing right now is probably a heatbox of death for components. Probably time to get something with better airflow.. I got two 120mm fans in there right now. I may try adding another out take on the back.

My GPU temp went down 35C after I took it out and used a can of air on it.

@Bradtech519 - do the temps go down if you remove the side of the case?

GPU temp dropped 10c within 30-45 min working.. CPU temp went up by 4-5c with side off though.
