Looking to get my first LCD

Looking really hard at AG Neovo F-419, but many of the user reviews at Newegg says it does "less than well" when you bring it down from the 1280x1024 setting. Otherwise it gets rave reviews.

I have been using my Viewsonic GS771 at 1024x768 for years. When I set the GS771 up at the 1280x1024 setting - icons squish horizontally and the icons and print are much smaller (tough on old eyes).

I am thinking that 1280x1024 must be for 16x9 viewing. Should I look for a monitor that will do the smaller resolutions well - or is this something I have to expect in an LCD?

By the way - I will do a dual monitor setup with the GS771 - with 512 Mg of ram. Enough ram?

Thanks

1280x1024 is not a proper 4:3 resolution so it wont look right on that monitor , Try 1280x960.

Eh, I can't imagine using 1024x768 since I got a 19" CRT 5 years ago. Its more for some my parents would like, but if you want to do anything you need some screen space.

1280x1024 is a bit small for a 17" CRT, but might not be too bad on a LCD (1" more screen). You can always increase the font size or DPI. And yeah 1280x1024 looks weird once you switch to a proper aspect like 1280x960 or 1360x1024.

1280x1024 on a 17 inch CRT is blurry and way to small. You will definetly want a 17 or 19 inch LCD that is over 300 dollars, or save up for a 2005 fpw.

So if your monitor can do 12x10, you should put it at 12x96 since that's a 4:3 resolution? Is that 4:3 resolution important for games or media-viewing or what? I've just moved up to 12x10 from 10x76 and am curious.

If you get a 19" LCD, then 1280 x 1024 will look fine. The pixels are pretty large, so it should ne no trouble on your eyes. Do not get a 17" LCD if you have older eyes, as the pixel size will be really small. My wifde tried out a 17" LCD and hated how small everything was. However she is fine with my 19" LCD.

This monitor is very good, and is currently on sale at NewEgg:

I also have a BenQ monitor. Very good quality, even though it may not be as well known in the U.S.

I personally think it's important to match the aspect ratio (AR) of your monitor. Typically that means 4:3, so for a normal CRT, use 1280x960. Most 1280x1024 LCDs are actually 5:4 AR themselves (in order to maintain square pixels, which I also think is important) so you should run them as 1280x1024.

Thanks for all the replies - guys. I made the leap and got a Neovo 19" - but I got the E19A at what I think was a steal at ClubIT. They are new, and bless them. I do not know how they did it - but 359.99 less a 70.00 rebate was just too good to pass up. Newegg had the same LCD for 439-50.00 rebate.

Think I will post this on good deals.

LCDs only work well at native resolutions. All other resolutions will not be as sharp. A CRT will be sharper.

LCD looks best in their native resolution, for most 19" LCDs that's 1280x1024. It works for me, and because my Hyundai L90D+ (8ms) has pivot, tilt and height adjustment, I can read Anand in 1024x1280, that's awesome I assure you. Get 19"LCD + pivot, it's worth it. Also working on text is great, cause an A4 is taller than it is wide :p just like my screen...
Aspect ratio 4x3 or 5x4 is unimportant. Games run at all. 1280x1024 makes DungeonSiege II and Warhammer 40k: Dawn of War look great.
