Like the title says...

I played a couple of F2P MMOs during 2007-2009, over 300 wasted split between Rappelz and Atlantica Online...

Nevertheless, here came the MMO burnout and i just haven't touched one since last year. So, i'm here to ask what is probably the best MMO to try to get back into the genre?

Obviously there is WOW and i am willing to pay if so be necessary...

But, anyone else have any others to suggest? I'm not sure i'm ready for WoW yet, world seems overly massive and i probably won't be able to touch any expansions until i even get to a certain level...

There is always LOTRO and EVE...but then again, i've never played any of these games...

I've tried going back to the old games i played and the F2P enviroment just damages the economic system too much...Suggestions?

Try Anarchy Online... produced by Funcom in Norway.

I was a very active player from 2002-2006, but fell victim to MMO burnout as well.

The base game is free, you will have to move to a paid account for the expansions.

It is a Sci-Fi fantasy, set on the terraformed world of Rubi-Ka.

Check out www.gridstream.org, which is an internet radio station broadcast from in-game.

Copied from Wikipedia:
GridStream Productions was founded around May 2002[2] by Anarchy Online celebrity and avatar Lan Tarryk Kozar[3] with others, and continues to be run by some of the original staff and founders. The broadcasts (or Gridcasting[4] as they call it in a roleplaying sense) are usually hosted from within the virtual world of Anarchy Online an MMORPG by Funcom. The fan base is mostly AO (Anarchy Online) players, although there are listeners from other games and even listeners who do not play games. GridStream was one of the very first MMORPG radio stations on the internet and helped to pioneer[5] the concept of broadcasting from within a virtual world, it is also currently one of the oldest MMORPG radio stations still broadcasting.

While I could never get into World of Warcraft, I do have an addiction to Eve: Online. It is by far the most fun MMO I have ever played, but mostly it is because it is the biggest most open sandbox type game I have ever played, and I love open-ended gameplay.

World of Wacraft is massive in the sense that it has a lot content, but it's not a difficult game to get into. It's not until you reach end-game raiding that things start gettting hardcore. By then you'll need all the expansions, so it would by far the most expensive option.

EVE Online on the other hand has a difficultly curve like a wall. I don't know if you can find a more hardcore MMORPG. This is the game Lord of the Rings: Online is more or less like World of Warcraft, I suppose, but I dunno what the end game is supposed be like.

All these MMORPGs and others have free trials you can download so you might as well give those a try to see what you like.

If youve never played WoW Id say give it a try. Id be willing to bet its the most polished MMO in existence.

Ive been playing Warhammer Online, its like WoW but PvP focused where WoW is PvE focussed.

LotRO is pretty enjoyable... the only thing that kept me coming back to WoW is the community.

Eve onine.

If you want an awesome MMO with very few crappy players and very few players under the age of 25.

Ehh, I've gotten back into wow since quitting in May. Started a new character on a new realm with a friend.

Low level stuff is pretty fun ... I've leveled an undead and a troll through the newbie zones, and started a goblin and just got to level 6... I'm having much more fun with it now than I did in the past...

Agreed. LotRO was pretty cool - looked really nice and seems pretty well put together. It was amusing but not nearly as many people play as do WoW. So... I play WoW. Now isn't a terrible time to get started.. a lot of transition going on with the new expansion that just came out and as others said, the previous ones are way cheaper now if you look in the right place.

I wouldn't suggest WoW. It's one boring quest grind game. I'd suggest trying something a bit more innovative.

Honestly, I'd suggest reading www.massively.com and see if something there triggers your interest based on the news articles.

I've played all the big ones. EQ, EQ2, AO, LOTRO, WoW and EvE. With the exception of EvE and AO, I've played them all to max level and into the raid game.

EQ, EQ2, AO: Communities are basically toast. Skip these.

LOTRO: Was a really good game until they released their last xpac, Siege of Mirkwood. Their customer base basically evaporated because the xpac was horrible. Now the game is even worse with F2Per's and no new xpac on the horizon...over a year after the last one came out. If you decide to play the game, buy a $5 copy on Amazon and play for a month free with no F2P restrictions. You'll be tired of the game before the month is up, anyway.

EvE: Is a game that takes a LOT of time getting into due to the timed training system. They reduced the time that it takes to become functional, but you are still easily 6 months out from being marginally useful to any small org.

WoW: They revamped the entire 1-60 game and released it this month. It's quite superb with restyled areas and quests. Level speed is very quick and there's nothing remotely resembling a grind about leveling in this game. I started a new character to play through the revamp and went from 1 to 70 in a week.

But i would have to buy Cataclysm to be able to play the revamped part, or no?

Well he would eventually. Don't be fooled into thinking you won't need the expansion packs, you will very fast.

Seriously, go EvE. WoW is just endless questing over and over and over and over and over.

+1

Depends on what you want out of a game really. But I have experience with both (level 85 and friends who raid hard core)and will tell you EVE is the better game for my personality.

Basically its Market vs Swords. Pick one.

I tried to get back into also a few months back and LOTRO was recommended a lot so I tried it. I relay like the story line the game follows and there are a lot of new players now that it is free to play but unless you like doing things like this, kill 60 spiders then kill 120 more to raise a certain stat like dex 1 you will not do good in thew game. That is why I quit I got so bored with finding what mobs I needed to kill to get to the next lv in the stat or a new one or for rep because it gets to were you need to kill more mobs as you need higher stats.
To me that took away from the game and you need good equipment and stats.

That being said the crafting systems is excellent and the quest are fun. I like every thing about the game other than the deeds to raise your stats that you needed.
