Question Looking to get a UPS...

My system has a PSU rated at 850 W, with actual power draw for the system being around 600 W (unsure if this is peak, but it's what is reported by pcpartpicker).

A few questions:

- What should I be looking for in a UPS? I only need it to function for a few minutes during a blackout or whatnot, just to give me time to save my work and such. I mean, how do I pick out wattage and features and such? I definitely do want maximum surge protection, so I can just plug stuff in and totally not worry about it.
- Is APC still the best brand out there for us consumers?
- Does routing ethernet cables through a UPS have any problems associated with it? (I'm asking because I once used an old Belkin surge protector that would refuse to work properly with ADSL when routed through it.)

EDIT: also, I suppose I'd be hooking up my router, AP, and other peripherals to the UPS as well, so more wattage required then? Or no, given I won't hook up non-critical peripherals to battery outlets?

So far I think I might just get an APC BR1500MS2/1500VA. Or maybe even a 1000VA model.

~600 W rig
+ 2 monitors
+ 3 networking devices
+ misc. peripherals (minimal)

Overkill? I just need it to keep my main rig and ideally both monitors functioning for 5+ minutes following an outage (10+ minutes being ideal).

You have it correct. wall/ISP goes to IN, then OUT goes to my router/networking device. If you aren't using a cable modem, I would call them to verify. Who is your Isp?

Just had to replace my 1200va apc battery as it would beep super annoyingly till you turned it off. I think the replacement battery was 35 and very easy to pop in a new one. I have a cyberpowr that needs a needs a battery too but don't remember why I choose to change the 1200 instead of the cyberpowrr 1500 battery. (Only bad part about these things are the battery needs to be replaced after a few years even tho zero power out etc.
 
Do all UPS's need new battery's after a few years ??

I had 4 x 500va or 600va APC's that battery's crapped out within 3 or 4 months of each other

Cant remember how long they lasted though

In my experience yes. Most last 3-4 years at best. I replace them with the cheapest one I can find at the time as long as the reviews are decent. They all seem to last the same amount of time so don't waste money on the "name brand".

Yes, finding a quality product is where the stumbling block is. The stock batteries are likely compromised due to a mix of storage environment and the lack of charging on the shelf, but also the quality of the battery itself, which will not be good if from China.
