Wasn't sure where to put this question so if it needs to be moved please move it.

I'm in the market for a PS3. I do most of my gaming on PC so it will be my first console since the PS1. I was first looking for a Blu-Ray player and after doing some research found out that the PS3 makes a pretty good Blu-Ray player as well so if i'm going to spend $400+ on a stand alone player why not have it play games as well. My current question has to do with what the big difference is between the 40gb and 80gb systems. I know the 80gb is backward compatible with PS2 games which doesn't really mean much to me since I don't have any PS2 games so other than that are there any big advantages to the 80gb over the 40gb that justifies the extra $100? I'm still pretty new so any other information woud be appreciated. Thanks.

If you aren't in it for the backward compatibility, than the 40 gig is fine. But in a couple of month they are releasing a 80 GB bundle with the 80 gb PS3, MGS4, and a DS3 for 500 bucks. So you might want to wait for that. If MGS4 isn't your thing, go for the 40 gig.

Besides having 40GB space and BC as you mentioned, it also has 4 USB ports vs 2 on 40GB.

There are piles of good PS2 games that are still worth buying today, and many of them are priced at $15-20 instead of $60. So BC might be a more valuable feature than you think.

What kinds of games do you like?

The 80GB version supports SACD and more importantly, a memory reader that reads several different types of flash memory. I'm recommending the 80GB version for my parents because of the memory card reader. They can just pop in their memory card from their camera and view their vacation photos on a big HD screen.

i was in a similiar boat in that the last console i owned was the n64. i bought the 40gb as i didnt have any ps2 games and if i needed a card reader/more usb ports i could just attach a hub or a usb card reader.

Seriously. I since I got my PS3 in January, I've mostly been playing PS2 games on it. PS2 games on the PS3 also look much better on an HDTV than if you plugged a PS2 directly into it. Almost done with the Devil May Cry series - I'm trying to finish it up so I can get DMC4.

Thanks guys. My wife is planning on getting a Wii when and if she can get her hands on one and I know that comes with a SD card reader. Like I said, this is my first console since PS1 so the DMC series doesn't really mean anything to me. I will probably use the PS3 mostly as a Blu-Ray player and games would come 2nd. Atleast thats my mind set as of now that could change once I get one. I guess maybe I should hold off a little bit.

The PS3 will work with that Home Theater, but it looks like the receiver only has a few inputs. It has one HDMI and one optical input, you'll almost assuredly want to use one of those for your PS3's surround sound.

Do you already have sources utilizing those inputs (i.e. HD/Digital Cable Box)?

I have the HDMI one used for the cable box..

Then just get a optical cable (monoprice.com) and plug it into your sound system and plug your PS3 up to your TV normally.

The other (slightly more expensive) option would be to get a HDMI switcher.

If you want MGS and rumble, you lose $110 on the 80GB buying it now instead of in June.

You could always join GameTap for a couple of months to catch up on any oldies you missed, and to play the new Sam & Max.

The 40Gb is made with 65nm fabrication process so it is also quieter, cooler and more reliable..

I'm real close to getting the 40gb. I know the BC could come back to bite me in the end on the off chance I do want to play some PS2 games.

Yea it might, I have used my PS3's for more ps1 games than anything else. LOL

Right now I am using them to play through Xenogears side by side with a friend.

Speaking of PS1. I'd love to get my hands on the Mortal Kombat Trilogy. Is the 40gb BC with PS1?
