Let's get right to the point:

Should I get a Core 2 Duo rig or wait till the next generation of processors come out to ensure my computer has maximum future proof capability's?

I guess what I am asking is how long does the Core 2 Duo have?

The only reaason to wait is if you want to wait for Quad Core, but why wait when C2D is great as it is now?

I know, I'm running

Dell 8400 (Yea I know)
P4 530@3Ghz
2GB OCZ DDR2 533 RAM
XFX XXX 7600GT Edition
Generic 160Gb HD

What I plan on doing is getting the case, PSU, and after market cooler and getting a new HD, a E6600, and a DDR2 800 RAM

The longer you wait, the more you can get for your money. But of course then no one would ever buy a PC. I'd go now unless there's somethig specific you would need the extras from a Quad core for.

And if you want to donate your current PC to me, I'll take it. :)

What, reusing the Dell motherboard? Hell no.

Keeping the video card? What do you use your computer for?

"Future proof" is a dream. Wake up.

If you have the money and the desire for the upgrade/new rig, then don't wait forever. HOWEVER... at least wait until the upcoming Intel price drop. It'll be the first good price drop since the Core 2 Duo chips came out, so it'll be a doozy. IIRC it is on 4/22 or thereabouts. Probably wait a couple weeks after the official price drop date for pricing to "settle" and then that will be as good a buying time as any for a while. As a bonus, some people feel that RAM prices are going to go down a bit more.

Having just built a new system in the last 2 weeks, I would definitely recommend...wait. The new DFI 965P board is just hitting the market now and looks like a winner. All of the other boards out now are quite quirky. Also there will be new cores and price drops in the next month. I would wait at least that long and then think hard about getting a quad core.

I will be reusing the Processor not the mobo

Yeah I will get the Video for now till the DX10 cards get a bit more mature (at least till R600 is realsed)

And I'm not looking to Fure Proof my rig I realize thats impossible. What I am looking for is getting the longest life out of the rig as possible, be it by waiting till the next generation of processors, new RAM speeds, new PCI-E speeds, new HD tech, whatever.

Edit: Thanks for the tips guys I will wait till next month to see what happends
