My wife thinks the wrinkles are cute, but I have no idea what the dogs are actually like. If you have any experience with shar pei's, let me know. I'm trying to find out temperment and if they shed (and how much). We're also looking at goldendoodles. A friend of mine has one of those and it's a great dog.

We live in apartment right now. Looking for a house. Lots of space outside to walk the dog, but not a huge apartment. Apartment complex is pet friendly. Neighbor has a black lab.

There is no such thing as a "goldendoodle".
The correct term is "crossbreed" or "mutt".

For now. I hear there's a group that's going through the process of getting the "doodles" recognized as a breed.

Either way, cute dogs, great personality, little shedding. Who cares if it's an actual breed or not?

I'm not into dog shows. I'm trying to keep my wife's maternal instincts at bay for a few more years. ;)

Never had a shar pei but there is a person down the street that has like 10 of them and to keep them clean under the wrinkles becomes a pain apparently. Also they can be somewhat aggressive.

if you want a dog that doesn't shed you could get a toy poodle. Not a bit of shedding and a very good dog if someone has allergies.

Personally, I find poodles to be awfully ugly animals.

I grew up with a Shar Pei. They can be aggresive if other dogs come around. Ours seemed to be very smart. We had a small problem with the wrinkles getting in the dogs eyes and causing a slight infection.

While your poodle isn't monstrously ugly like show poodles, it's still not a pleasant looking dog. Sorry. :(

also i think both my cats are bigger then your dog based on those pics

i think that's it mostly. a lot of guys just don't like little dogs. well, i don't carry her around with me all over the place. i don't have any cute little outfits i put her in, and i don't have a dog carrier or purse i put her in to take her shopping with me. so, just thought i'd clear up those misconceptions. :p

A co-worker got a Shar Pei several years back and it was nothing but problems. There were skin issues (infections in the wrinkly areas), eye problems from the skin overhanging the forehead, and problems with fighting other dogs due to being over-aggressive. He said he would never recommend one to anybody.

BTW I think the poodle looks cute.

Looks like the goldendoodle is moving up on the list.

I grew up with golden retreivers, so that's the kind of dog that I like. But inside is no place for a dog that sheds as much as a golden retriever.

My grandmother has always had a toy or miniature poodle. While they've been decent dogs, I REFUSE to get a poodle, shih-tzu, taco bell dog, or any other living creature that can be carried in a purse. My wife was gunning for a weiner dog and that's not happening either.

You know you don't have to post in threads you have no clue on.

The 'doodle' breed is gaining popularity. Regardless if it's a registered purebreed though, saying mutt or crossbreed is ambiguous. The proper way to refer to the dog is by that or Labradoodle. No one using these titles is claiming it's UKC or AKC et al...it's the proper breed reference.

Shar Pei's suffer many health problems due to the way they have been bred. Make sure you get them (or any dog) checked out by a good vet.

I would google up the breed and see for yourself what to look for and ask. In your search really pay attention to the personality traits as well. Some dogs aren't really fun by nature. Not all dogs good on paper are good in person though. Walk away from any overly aggressive puppies or overly timid no matter how hard they tug on the heartstrings.

The Labradoodle is pretty common around here and from talking to those that own them make good dogs for those with kids/babies and other pets. The breeder makes or breaks the dog though.
