Looking to expand NAS server past existing server chassis, tips?

Hey Guys,

I have a 24 disk 48TB NAS server that I've built and use for storing financial market data (tick data is really big). This is well and all, operates well, but I'm running out of space. All the disks are currently on a 24 port Areca card. I'd like to simply stick another areca in there and attach another 24 disks, however, my question comes down to how the best way to do that is. My server chassis is totally full (it only supported 24 disks to begin with).

Are there 24+ disk server chassis designed for this purpose (simply holding additional disks, not an actual PC)? How would the best way be to connect them to the Areca in the main PC? Multilane SAS? How do the disks in the 2nd chassis know to power on when the power in the first chassis goes on? Etc.

Regards,
John

Yes, what you want does exist. I'm most familiar with the Dell MD series. Essentially they work just like your internal drives, only there is an external SAS connector going from the server to the disk chassis.
