I want to buy skis this winter. I'm an intermediate skier, I'd say. I rarely go on blacks, stay on blues most of the time.

What brands should I be looking at?
Should I buy new or used? Anything bad about new? (price is a factor)
What kind of skis should I get?

You should be able to find a good deal on some older pairs left over from last year or the year before. Since you are just doing blues, there isn't really too much you need to worry about and the major factor will be price.

indeed. I would look at used skies. I wouldnt suggest getting rentals, just because the use they put on in a weekend is the ammount of use you put on in a year. Look for a ski swap or something. If you are set on getting new skies, PM me and ill let you know about what is out there.

What kinda turns do you make?

how much do you weigh?

How fast do you turn into your turns?

Ski bumps?

what size skis have you used?

Might want to look into used skis they are pretty cheap.

Kind of turns... well I make pretty narrow and relatively fast turns.
I weigh (only) 120 pounds.
I don't ski bumps but it seems fun and I want to!
I have no idea what size I've used, I'm about 5'11 and the skis I rented last year were up to my chin.

I've been having the same problem trying to find good ski equipment reviews and info online. I never thought I'd check ATOT... good idea.

My sister got a great deal at the Chicago Ski Expo, it's at our local convention center and they sell a lot of older model but still unused models. Perhaps try that. One thing sites recommend is only buy after trying out the ski. Requiring you to usually renting it. Good idea, but a lil expensive. Though I've heard of places in Colorado letting you try out the skis like buying a car.

Don't forget the boot, your foot has to be comfortable. There are places that will make custom boots for you, and its relatively cheap.

Seriously....look into Blizzard. If you want to have fun and aren't very experienced, shorter skis are better.

They're easier to turn and are slower to build up speed.
You're 5'11" so, try a pair of 90cm or 95cm.

Are those the short ones? Also called blades or something?

Ski's should be as tall as you are. Just go to a ski shop, look for something in the cheap range, and get them.

You don't need any fancy gizmo's or anything.

Hell, I have been using the same ski's for almost 8 years now.. I am a better skiier then when I bought them but they still work fine.

I know you can ski just fine with any pair, but I've tried a few different ones. I've tried the old super long sleek ones that handle like crap, I've tried slightly shorter but also straight ones and they handle and turn pretty badly as well, and I've tried the newer shape skis which I like because it's easy to turn and not easy to slip up for me. I was just thinking if I'm going to buy one, I might as well get ones that work well since I go skiing every year because I live in Vancouver, with mountains just 45 minutes away.

I guess I'll just go to a used equipment place and pick out ones that look nice to me.
