Is this going to be strictly a work truck, or kind of like a second car?
I really prefer the ones with the jump seats behind the front seats. Even if you don't use them as seats, you can still carry and store stuff locked up.

I like the extended cab too..

I have a Dakota, and I really like owning a small pickup with an extended cab and I still have a 6.5' bed.

Mainly to haul my ass from NC to TX for Pilot Training in Wichita Falls, at Sheppard Air Force Base. I want an automatic and extended cab would be nice, but if I can't get it then I don't sweat it...

If you're just going to ferry yourself, why do you want a truck? Why not a car? Your pack and charts would be safer in a locked trunk and you'd get better mileage.

Then please don't get a V8. Just money down the drain when it comes to gas.

I was going to put a solid cover on the back of the truck...I'm going into the Euro-NATO Joint Jet Pilot Training program some point in the summer or early fall...click here for the infoLink

Is the V8 that fuel efficient?

When it comes to Dakotas, they all get about the same gas mileage. The 3.9 V6 gets about 13 city 18 highway (for the 4x4). The 5.2 V8 is about the same, and the 5.9 is just slightly lower: 12 city 17 highway or there about. The 4.7 V8 is slightly better than the 5.2 or the 5.9 and has about the same power as the 5.9.

Well then..don't listen to me. That sounds fine.

By the way, if you end up getting a 3.9 V6 Dakota, I'd get a manual. The 3.9 doesn't have a lot of balls for a truck... I have a 3.9/auto and I tow a 1000 lbs jetski and trailer around. It does OK, but it struggles with hills on the highway. (Shifting in and out of overdrive more than I like.) I guess if you never want to tow anything, then it wouldn't matter much.

EDIT: I get 18 on the highway with mine... In the winter when it is cold, I get about 13.

I get 17-18MPG in my Dakota. And that's driving it reletively quickly up and down hills. The WORST I have had is 15MPG. And that was only once. I think I that was the tank of gas I went drag racing with. (I got in 8 runs in 2 hours. Very much a learning experience) .

Edit: 4.7+5 speed. I pulled mid 15's that day, I had only been driving a stick for two months at the time and could probably have pulled low 15's with better launches.
