ok, i've been living on on board audio for way way to long and its time to get a nice sound card. needs to do 5.1 (i use a logitech Z506) so needs 3.5mm connectors. mostly game and listing to music. im not a huge audiophile so having the ability to switch out dac's and stuff is not needed. i just want something that has good sound quality but also has decent driver support.

was looking at the
Creative Sound Blaster Z
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16829102054

and the
ASUS Xonar DX 7.1
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16829132006

not sure if these are any good or if im going to overboard and i can get a cheaper audio card?

If you use headphones for gaming, get the DGX. Dolby Headphone makes a significant difference compared to stereo. If you're on speakers all the time, DSX.

I moved this thread to General Hardware. Sound cards are not peripherals.

Creative Sound Blaster Z would make a good choice.

I would absolutely buy nicer speakers before spending more than $20 on a sound card. A $10/satellite + $50 sub system is not nearly good enough to actually need a dedicated sound card.

i game mostly with my speakers but i do every once in a while game and use my Logitech G230 headset.

i noticed that only difference with those two sound cards is 192KHz vs 96KHz i have no idea what that means lol. is that just the bandwidth of the audio? will the 192KHz make much difference than the other? im kinda kinda cheap and dont want to spend the extra $ if i probably wont hear that much of a difference. plus i plan on buying a mechanical keyboard as well so i dont want to blow all my $ on just a sound card.

also whats the difference with the DSX and the more expensive ones?

192 KHz vs. 96 KHz is referring to the sampling rate that the internal hardware can process and output. Makes no difference at all if you don't have any 192 KHz sources (you probably don't in the typical PC environment).
