looking to buy a RV

OutHouse

Grrrrr i found a nice 1998 classA holiday Rambler gas pusher for 20K. so i have been looking into the registration fees and Colorado taxes the original sales price of the RV for LIFE!!!

the RV im looking at cost 59K new so my tags will cost me 900-1200 annually.

the Holiday rambler just wasn't what we were looking for so we went to a RV dealer and found a 1999 Georgi Boy Cruisemaster. I got a the dealership down to a very nice price that was attractive to me and well below NADA blue book its more than the holiday rambler but is a few feet longer and has a slide out which is very nice feature.

anyway here are a few pics.

We almost bought an RV in 2005. One of the people who owned a used one that we looked at found a shady way around the high Kahleeforneeya licensing...they incorporated in Montana, used a Montana address, (they don't live there, don't have family or friends there, don't own any property there...just something they set up when they filed family incorporation) and instead of $1000/year for Kahleeforneeya license fees, they paid about $300/year.

That is own of the most retarded things I have ever heard of. Yes an RV is a luxury so I can see them being taxed and other fees being assessed at a higher rate than a normal automobile, but damn come on.

In addition to Montana I have also heard of Nevada being used as a registration dumping ground.

heh-heh...I NEVER said it was legal...in fact, I think my second sentence called it shady.

But can't you write off some of the interest on your loan for the RV by claiming it as a vacation home?

its at the right price that i dont need a loan, its the reason im buying used. you would be suprised how good of shape used RV's are when they had one owner and they are senior citizens.

There are a bunch of good deals on RV's of late. Between last summer's gas prices and the economy, people are almost giving the dammed things away..but DMV still extracts their pieces of silver.

I'm curious as to who else buys an RV?

Start a home business - tupperware, longaberger baskets, mary kay cosmetics, avon, whatever...

Get some magnets to put on the side of the vehicle advertising that you sell avon.

Wherever you go on vacation, go camper to camper trying to sell whatever it is you decide to sell. Depreciate the value of the vehicle as a business expense. 🙂

Note: I am not a CPA, my advice is 95% in jest, 5% wondering if this would actually be legal. No one said you had to be a smart businessperson.

How about a trailer instead?

Of course then you need a big truck or SUV to tow it.

But if you already have a truck or SUV that can, then maybe that'd be the way to go?

Try elkhart indiana. I hear they are auctioning RVs left and right.

I've never been interested in a RV; I like traveling light. The perfect RV for me would be the VW Eurovan Westfalia. I don't even know if they still make them, but it's a sweet ride. Years ago I had a couple of aircooled VW campers, and I loved them.

But if you buy one new...cheap enough, that should reduce the registration/license fees...right?

not sure about that, reg is higher for any new vehicle from cars, motorcycles, boats and RV's the thing with RV's that reg cost doesnt go down as fast compared to other motor vehicles.
we peeked at the new ones on the lots and they are still pretty damn expensive. like you said a few post up, if you look aroud there are very nice deals to be had on 1 owner rigs that have been maintained very very well. the one i put a deposit on would have sold for 45K last year I got it for 31 plus 6 new tires, the tires on it now are weather cracked on the sidewalls. has 32,000 miles and still smells new inside. I took my creeper with me and scooted around under it for a while and did not see anything that raised red flags. my wife and I hovered around it, in it and under it for about 4 hours. checking and rechecking stuff. I found a nice rv check list online that i printed out and took with me. this rig is solid. we went through it many times and did not find anything wrong with it. compared to the holiday rambler its is a much better buy.

the only selling point with the Holiday rambler is that he has a tow car (2004 Saturn loaded) he has a air compressor in the back compartment that hooks up to a air line on the tow car to a piston that connects to a base plate and then to the break pedal. that helps a lot when stopping. he wanted 24K for the rig and for the car included he wanted 29K.

The only thing wrong with this one we found was that the cockpit a/C cut out twice. I wrote on the deposit contract that will be fixed before we take delivery.

after stomach settled down for actually doing this, we are getting excited in going on nice weekend trips in the Rockies. my mom lived with us for 4 years before she passed on the 4th and while she lived with us my wife and I had to take constant care of her. becasue of that we could not take the kids out and show them all the different parts of colorado or just have a day trip to like the scotish festival in Estes park that happens in September. my oldest is 15 and the only place she has been is yellowstone back in 2002, she remembers part of it but our other two kids really dont remember it. she remembers it because we went in August, pitched our tent and the next night the temp dropped to 19 and snowed 3 inches. IN AUGUST! we had to fire up the truck and sleep in there to keep warm well my days of roughing it are over.

next to my house this is the largest thing i have ever bought.

Do the taxes hit those pull-along / 3rd wheel ones the same way? I know there are Pro's & Con's to that I'm sure. Anyway, the annual Taxes do seem high but gas is going to be a drain as well. I heard about someone who bought one and for the cost of it, plus expenses, they could much easier have bought a luxery vehicle and stayed at nice hotels everywhere they went for less for a VERY long time. And that was back well before the gas crunch. Yeah, it's not an investment, just saying... think 2x about it.

i understand what you are saying but with 3 kids, between a hotel, and buying food is very expensive for a week get away. We went down to texas last week and even eating cheap i spent on average 140 a day just in eating out, and that is eating cheap. Colorado has a lot of state parks and national parks where there isnt a hotel for miles. plus all the parks adjacent to colorado like Rushmore is only 6 hours away and Moab is 8 hours away.

we plan on using it a lot.

people like me who just turned 40 and going going through a mid life crisis. 😉

I just bought a 2009 Kodiak 20' expandable (30ft open) and I'm very happy with it. Its loaded. I got it at the Atlantic City Boat and RV show last year. The way the economy is, there are some great deals on these things. I have a Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo so I was already good as far as towing it. We got the show price, PLUS I weaseled a nice tow package with sway and leveling. Tows nicer. AND I made them put new tent ends on them since the ones on there were kinda bleh from being open all the time for displays. I paid $15,800 for it. I've seen it around 20K everywhere else.
Heres a pic of it in the snow March 2...
When we picked it up from the dealership, tent ends open.
Interior shot from rear bunk, bathroom door is on the left
Interior shot from front bunk. Fiance standing in doorway. VERY nice size fridge&freezer I might add.(Last two shots are from the show where we bought it).

The table also converts down to a bed. I'm telling you, you may want to consider a trailer instead of a motorhome. Its much easier to go places when you are set up. With a motorhome, you have to unhook your sewer, power, water, etc everytime you go somewhere. Unless your bringing/towing another vehicle.

Congratulations! Now, there are two types of people with RVs: the people who park it along side their house and move it for 1 week a year while on vacation, and people who take off for 3 day weekends all the time. I hope you're a member of the latter group.

For the argument about "luxury hotels" for the same price - many of the locations where you would enjoy a wonderful week with your family in an RV don't have a "luxury hotel" for many miles. Where you'd go with the RV and where you'd stay in a luxury hotel are generally two completely different environments..
