looking to buy a new full size truck... any advice?

Current mid-sized SUV (2004 blazer) just crossed the 100K mark and is starting to age, so i think its time to buy a new vehicle.

Most of the mid-sized truck based SUV's are currently off the market, and I dont want to invest in a full size SUV so i am leaning toward a full size truck.

Currently considering an F150 FX4 and a Silverado 1500HD all star.

for the uses I have, I need a 4 door crew cab for the family, and the short bed will accomdate most of my hauling needs.

i need to finance around 27000 or less to keep my payment around $425/month. Depending on my trade value, I think i can do this with chevy.

Currently chevy is offering 1000 loyalty cash, 2500 incentives (on silverado 1500), 2000 (if you finance through GMAC) and a discount at or below invoice for my membership to a particular credit union. (these incentives end 2/28) However...I have not been able to find any ford incentives/rebates on the web, anywhere.

With the weather around here I need the 4WD, and since we do a lot of backwoods hunting and fishing, I need a good truck, not a crossover.
I see that the silverado with the 5.3 active fuel management is rated at 15/21, which is about what I get now, but the F150 is rated 13/18 for any size V8.

timeframe to purchase: now to next 6 months.

First time really buying a vehicle by myself. So i need to know what else to consider/research, etc. any advice on vehicle choices is welcome too.

My stepdad has always been a Chevy guy..I've heard good things about the F150's too.

Or you could buy my Tundra and save many thousands! 😉 😀 😛

.

Chevy not actually that high for a 4X4 and Ford not actually that low, as far as I can tell.

Chevy (or GMC).

Unless of course you're considering a Raptor....:awe:

According to both ford and chevy Sites...

Chevy 4.8L V8 NAFM 4x4 - 13/18
Chevy 5.3L V8 AFM 4x4 - 15/20
ford 4.6L V8 Triton 4x4 - 14/19
Ford 5.4L V8 Triton 4x4 - 14/18

Perhaps you could wait on the new Ford engines?

I've read much about the eco-boost... im not sure I want to put a V6 in a full size truck.

365hp and 420ft/lbs from way down low to way up high...and better economy than the V8's. And been through extensive testing on the dyno and in an F-150...

what about wheel upgrades... seems like every truck has 16, 17,18, 20... steel, aluminum, titanium, etc.

what should i be considering here?

i have an 09 gmc 5.3 all terrain/z71, with afm. i drive mostly around town and my avg is 15.4 mpg. i do not think the highway milage is as good as they claim, i get around 19 usually running the speed limit of 75. at 55 you will get 20ish mpg.

i love my truck, i would not trade it for any other.

as far as wheels, get the truck you want and just get the stock wheels that come with it. if it is not a work truck you will get some pretty good aluminum wheels no matter the option package.

Supposedly some magazine was out normally driving a new ecoboost v6 F150 and was getting ~25mpg. I would definitely get one of those over just about anything except maybe the 6.2l v8 if I just had a desire to pay an assload for gas each month.

I've always had Chevy's, my only complaint about them is the electrical systems seem to get funky over time, mechanically though, I love them.

I say it's win/win either way, though I'd lean towards one of the new Fords, even the 3.7L is pretty sweet unless you need to tow a crazy amount or something.

thus far, Ive had 3 chevys.
Ive only had 2 complaints...
Front ball joints wear out very quickly.
Vortec 4300's eat oxygen sensors like candy bars.

+1 for ecoboost f-150

edit: in case you're worried about the engine

http://www.autoblog.com/2011/01/07/video-ford-yanks-f-150-ecoboost-hero-engine-out-of-baja-racer/

Ford has finally pulled the Ecoboost V6 engine from its Baja racer in preparation for the mill's tear down at the Detroit Auto Show. This particular lump has seen several lifetimes worth of abuse, from skidding logs to endurance towing around a NASCAR track and even competing in the legendary Baja 1000.

Even more surprising, all of that came after severe endurance tests at the factory. The engineers say that this V6 has racked up enough hours to drive the equivalent of six laps around the planet. How did it hold up? According to Ford, the Ecoboost engine still managed to turn out the same power figures on the dyno that it left the factory with.

Ford plans to strip the workhorse Ecoboost V6 down to its bare bones in front of a live audience at this year's Detroit Auto Show. The action gets going on January 15 at 11 a.m., so if you're in the greater Detroit area, swing on by for a glimpse at the engine's innards. Hit the jump for a look at the extraction process, but beware that it ain't the most interesting thing you'll watch all day.

edit: ecoboost f150 EPA rated at 16/22

a gearhead i know was invited to ford's test drive of the new F150s, and said the 3.5TT was stout, better than the V8s for driving around and towing.

Correction. V6 Turbo.

Turbo, as in those engines that require premium gasoline that cost 10% more than regular gasoline? It completely eliminates the point of saving gas. Yay we burn 10% less gas..... but the gas is 10% more expensive so it's really about the same fuel cost as before 😵

Get a diesel. Diesel has about 40% more energy per unit of volume than gasoline, so they get awesome mileage all the time!

Only requires 87 octane in the F150...
