Looking to buy a New Electric Stove...

an am wondering if i should get one of those smooth top ones or one with the coils. my questions are: are they a pain in the @$$ to keep clean? do they cook about the same as a coil? are they worth the extra $300+ over a coil? besides looks, what other advantages do they offer?

They are pretty easy to keep clean (unless you spill something sugary on 'em, it fuses on :| ) Other than that, I think it's a 'looks' issue. You can get a couple 'euro' style, iron-disk elements, they are nice for an even temperature. Watch out for those induction cooktops though, they're cool scientifically, but not practical unless you have all-ferrous cookware.

are you sure you wouldn't rather have a gas stove? or is that impractical for some reason?

i guess if you had to pick one, the smooth are a hell of a lot easier to clean than the coils. don't know if they're any better though... my guess is that they're better than the coils, because $300 is an awful lot just to keep it clean. imo.

Ceran-top (smooth-top) stoves are definitely the way to go.

I bought one about 3 years ago, and it's been great. They're quick to warm-up, and with the proper cleaner you can buy at the appliance store, easy to clean.

My next stove will be gas, but Ceran-top stoves are definitely the best electrics.

If I had to get electric, I'd get a smooth top for the looks and cleanliness issue. They're slower than a coil to change temperature though, and remain dangerously hot for a long while after use. Most have a warning light to tell you that the surface may be hot.

Those iron disc elements are horrible, IMO. My mom thought she got a bargain on one of those, barely used, but it really sucks (takes for-fckking-ever to change temperature), and she laments having wasted her money (my mom and step-dad have a history of wasting money trying to be stingy). She's going back to gas, even though all she has is propane.

i have a coil electric one in my apartment right now, i hate it. i prefer gas over any electric ones, but ide still go witht he flat ones over the coil i think

Depends on how much you cook, you ever cook anything with a Wok? you are gonna crack that ceramic top if you do.

Bummer you can't get gas. Gas Range/Electric stove is the way to go.
