hi all,

before i go off to buy a Northface or something, i was wondering if anyone had recommendations for a good winter coat/shell for skiing/snowboarding.

I've been using a Columbia Bugaboo for like 4-5 years now. It's served me well, but it's getting on in years.

Is Goretex really all that? Is there anything else I should look into other than Goretex?

Marmot Precip
Red Ledge Thunderlight

Goretex is overpriced a lot of the time.

I recommend shells because they are compressable and they give YOU the choice of what kind of insulation you want. In fall I wear my Red Ledge under a light fleece jacket for rain and wind protection. In winter I wear the Red Ledge with a heavier down coat.

Actually come to think of it, I'm not sure if my recommendations work too well, since they're primarily made for lightweight and lightweight doesn't stand up too well to faceplants at 30mph :p

Don't get Northface Gore-tex As much as I hate Northface, their own brand of waterproof-breathable called HyVent actually works quite well. If you like the brand and see a HyVent jacket substantially less than a Gore-tex, go for it. Otherwise, hit your local mountaineer store and get ready to drop $300 on a gorgeous 3-ply Gore-tex shell. Just be sure the store/maker offers an unconditional satisfaction guarantee.

EDIT: Yeah, Gore-Tex is the bomb. I used to bike courier and the only way to get through a week straight of rain without getting wet from either the rain or your sweat was to wear that stuff. Supposed to cause cancer though :(
