Looking to buy a DVD burner, need some help

So I'm looking to buy a decent DVD burner for my computer and I really havnt been keeping up with new hardware lately (i grew outta the nerd phase). I'm thinking the Plextor PX-712SA SATA burner is looking quite good considering all my IDE channels are full at the moment, but is it really worth the extra money for the SATA drive?

Everything ive read about it says its a great drive, never makes coasters and burns very quickly, but I still gotta wonder if its a wise buy, or just another fancy toy.

My mobo is an Asus A7N8X-E Deluxe, so ive got quite a few SATA ports open (all, actually 🙂 ) as well.

Any input, suggestions, comments, etc are quite welcome.

one thing to remember is to make sure your sata ports support ATAPI or else the burner will not work on those sata ports

hm, how does one go about finding that info? I would suspect my board to have it, as it was top o' the line at one time..

What you should know right away on this is that if you buy a Serial ATA DVD burner, the only real difference from an IDE burner is that it uses a different port. It won't be in any way, shape, or form faster/better.

You said your IDE ports were all full, so that would be a reason to get it. As its been said though, not all Serial ATA ports are there for these drives in mind, some are made specifically for Hard drives in a raid array. Typically, if you have SATA ports built into the chipset, they should be able to support non-hard drives. I'm not completely sure about the nForce 2, which I think is the chipset you have.

Well, my IDE channels are all technically full, i have 3 IDE hard drives and the secondary slave is a cd burner. i COULD replace the cd burner with an IDE dvd burner, or i could get an SATA drive and replace the cd burner with another hard drive (ive got a few maxtors floating around).

I'm pretty sure my board will support an SATA burner, but im not really sure which route would be best. more hard drive space, or cheaper cost.

I have 2x Plextor PX-716SA...work great when they work... finicky as HELL about the controller though. I would stay with a PATA burner. Plextor or NEC....
