Looking to buy a couch. I know nothing of the brands

I need to spend my Supplemental Security Income backpay before the 1st apparently as it's brought me over the $2000 limit for a single person on SSi and figured I would replace the aging couch I got from a thrift store years ago sooner than forfeit my next month's stipend. But I know basically nothing about brands, what material lasts and what is the most prone to cracking or where to even shop that isn't grossly overpricing their products.

I think I've settled on a modern black leather look, possibly a sectional. Budget is variable, $1000ish , though there is plenty of wiggle room up and down if necessary. But what's most important to me is that it would be spacious and comfortable enough for my mother to be able to sleep on when she visits, as she can't on the one I have right now. (my current couch is basically two big recliners fused together with a foot wide block in the middle that sticks out with storage and cup holders, making it impossible to lay down or sleep) Any suggestions?

Honestly, I'd probably go to a furniture store where you can sit on the things and see what they actually feel like.
The set I bought back in 2007 had microfiber fabric and it held up quite well considering the age of the kids and pets and all.

$1000 buys a lot of couch these days, and as the frog^ said, it's best to go to a big furniture store and see what you like. Pretty much all of the brands are the same these days, all the big stores (the non-name brand stores...ones that are more local) sell all of the same stuff, like what you would find on Wayfair.

If you have an Ikea near you, I'd honestly check that out first. They actually have some decent furniture. it's not all budget crap. At ~$1k+ budget, that will get you into their better tier furniture.

....I'd also avoid sleepers. They aren't comfortable to sleep on and they also aren't comfortable to sit on. Get a wider couch that provides enough room to treat it like a single bed for most humans. Those are much better.

leather...I like leather couches, too, but I also don't know how to identify quality vs crap. Usually, though, and probably still within your budget, as long as you condition it regularly, most should be fine. Even the faux leather. The biggest killer of leather is not cleaning it--little food or schmutz bits that get stuck around the seams will shred it to pieces as various asses move around those cushions over time. You really need to vacuum them regularly as a rule of thumb.

This style is actually decent and quite comfy

I think they have a version without the chaise, if you don't want that.

Couches with built in recliners are nice, but, they tend to have lots of plastic bits and dont last very long. Might last longer though for folks who are on the lighter side/more petite so maybe not a problem for you.

Also, used furniture stores can be great places to find really well made older solid furniture, but, might be hard to identify without doin research on what you find.

I still regret buying a big store sofa and then a week later seeing an awesome italian leather used sofa for similar price which was way way way nicer back in like 2004 when i moved to my first townhouse...

The last 2 couches I bought were Ethan Allen because we always want to pick out our fabric to match our color schemes. Furniture shops around here always have minimal selection and it's neat when you get to pick out exactly the fabric you want in your room. They can be much more expensive, but the furniture stores around here have some really poor quality in comparison to the selection and design.

My favorite of the two couches is a sectional called "Retreat" that has an extremely deep seat and great support. It's great for me because I'm tall.

Sit on it!

A Happy Days reference for you younguns. Seriously, ignore brands and go to a store and try them out. Most modern couches have no support and kill your back after awhile.

Yeah im wondering if this was a clever trap post by OP to get people to come over and check out his couch

And I'm wondering wtf is wrong with you that you view things in such context? Hence me wondering if you were asking them to your casting couch or maybe were just victimized by such a person causing you to idelibly link couches and creepy assholes trying to fuck.

I have to admit I kinda want one of those old school tufted nailhead couches, but at the same time they'd be a bitch to move I'd think. I also want a similar style wing back chair for some reason. Wish I still had the pics of the crazy wing back chairs and think there were a couple of couches as well.

Hell bent for leather. Get one of those giant bean bag couches. They’re impractical but awesome.

My buddy spent like five hundred bucks on a monster memory-foam beanbag chair. It's ridiculously awesome:

The only catch (aside from the price, which is apparently really competitive against other brands like LoveSac) is that it's really only made for one person. Eight feet sounds huge, but in order to prop it up to adjust it for you to sit up a bit & be comfortable & spread out as an adult, it's really a one-person seat. Don't be fooled by the petite model in the photo, lol:

We got our couch and a matching arm chair at Macy's. There was a furniture showroom 20 minutes away, which was a nice way to try out the chairs and see what kind of options were out there. The couch has held up well with it's 1 year of use (in a house with a small dog), and it didn't break the bank (it was actually cheaper than other couches we were considering). The only thing to watch out for are their "sales". Everything is always on sale, but some sales are better than others.
