I am in need of two hard drives to raid together as my old ones have died on me. As of now I am looking at 2 of these LInk , I am wondering if this is the best buy I can make with the amount it will cost me. Please recommend me to anything you think that would be a better buy for me. Thanks!

Drives are fine, but RAID0 is probably a waste unless you do nothing but shuffle big files around all day (e.g. high-end video editing). It doesn't make much difference for most desktop tasks.

Yes, just get a single hard drive or 3+ drives for RAID 5. RAID 0 is okay, but you won't really notice the performance difference. I had 2 7200RPM 8MB SATA drives in RAID 0 to hold me over until I got my 3rd hard drive. Now I'm running 3 drive RAID 5 for redundancy, which IMO is much better than RAID 0.

Another quick question, would you guys go with one Raptor 74 gb and get a 250 gb drive for storage or 2 250 gb hard drives raided at 0?

raid0 doubles the possibility of losing your data. If one drive feels like crapping out on you, your data will be lost. I just bought a raptor the other day coming from a diamondmax 10 and i noticed the difference. Its not a BIG difference but its there. A lot faster seeking (ie scanning system whether it be virus scanner or adaware) and you load onto games about 1 second faster! I lost a lot of important data last night from a partitioning crash. I am really looking into get 3+ Hds and doing a raid5. I think the raptor will be a better buy but will cost you more. If you're tight on money, just get a single 16mb ncq sata drive. They perform just as well.

Raptor + 250GB.

Raid 0 is ok, and if you do end up with it, just make double sure you have good backups going. Also, having a seperate drive for storage is probably a good idea for either setup. This could allow you to use, say, 80-100GB drives for the raid 0 and save a little cash. Then when one finally dies and all the data is gone, it was only applications.

True, hrm maybe I will go with one raptor and 1 s50 gb hard drives. But since I dont want to spend so much money I might as well go with 2 250's and not have them raided together. Thanks for all the replies!

FWIW - I just got a raptor also. I was using a RAID 0 set-up as my boot drive and can say that the single raptor is a little slower loading windows and other apps. But I like the idea of the stability that a single enterprise quality drive will provide over my RAID 0 which has given me some issues due to the all of the tweaking/messing around that I do on my system.

And right now, you can pick-up a 74gb raptor for $130 AR at Fry's or Outpost.com

look on anand's front article of the 7200.9. that drive is usually by far the worst performing and loudest drive. i'm not anti maxtor and i've never owned one, but i trust anand. a 160gb 7200.9 is around 90ish...
